She stared at the bruises on her wrist, from where the restraints had dug into her skin and she can’t help but wonder if it wasn’t him that changed– if it was her. Maybe she had changed picking up the pieces of the only family she had known.
Grief welled up, burning her eyes. She had thought that she should have been mad– furious at him, for leaving, for not contacting her but the relief of his heartbeat underneath her ear and the unsteady rhythm of his breaths under his uniform dissolved into relief.
Caleb's arms had slid around her, his hands cupping the pieces of her that were rapidly falling apart and had tucked her against himself, like he had when they were kids. Always the stalwart protector between her and the world.

He doesn’t want to unpack them now either, and especially not in front of his teammate. Johnny already got pitying enough looks as is with Ghost missing, they don’t need to know he’s coughing up petals for a dead man, too.
“Fuck.” Gaz says with feeling. Its an astute summary of what he feels, too.
Or, Ghost is MIA and Soap is so down bad he starts coughing up flowers.

He knows it’s Chris. There’s a reverberating timbre in his tone that Leon can feel through his chest, warm all over, the arm around his waist pulling him against a much more stable body. The world goes a little wobbly, funny at the edges. His feet are not cooperating, extremely ungraceful in their movement, but he’s being shuffled toward what he imagines is the door. “Oooh, big, strong man,” Leon says out loud. He wishes he hadn’t, but when he finally chances shifting his eyes upward to finally find Chris’ face, he thinks that Chris might be blushing.

If anything, Chris’s cruelty at least affirmed one thing. Asking had absolutely been a mistake. It confirmed the pull he’d been feeling since he’d first let Chris lay hands on him. It wasn’t safe. Being alone was safer and easier. He didn’t have the framework for whatever it was Chris expected of him- there were far too many guardrails for the fleeting moments of intimacy to be worthwhile.
