    Summary

Peter and Deadpool are held captive by a super-villain that has an inclination for torture. After she boasts her untarnished record at never having hurt a child or teenager, Peter is forced to break the truth to both her and Deadpool.

“Did you know I have a perfect record?” The villain collects a rusted pocket knife, tracing it up Peter’s arm, over his shoulders, down to his collarbone, as though considering where to cut. Peter focuses on controlling his breathing, fear twisting awfully in his belly. “You may look down on me, Mr. Spider-Man, but for all the righteous suffering I inflict, I’ve never hurt a child. Not once.”

“Y'know, I don’t think you do,” Peter blurts. At his words, Deadpool's stare intensifies. “Have a perfect, non-child harming record, that is.”

    Summary

“Peter,” Shannon says carefully, firm and to the point. “I think there’s more to it than that.”

    “I don’t,” he snaps.

“We’ll come back to it,” she says, in a way that makes him want to tell her they won’t.

Peter thinks, for the first time in a long time, of his old neighbors and then his old schoolyard friends. His mind coasts through images of them– all slightly blurred with time– until he lands on one in particular.

    Peter thinks about Steven.

This was so passively devastating in a way that’s very rare in fics. So carefully handled yet the weight of the implications hit hard. Woah

    Summary

Peter knows he did the best he could, and yet— nothing.

Not a blip. No extravagant rescue, no confirmation that help is on the way.

    No Tony.

Sure, he supposes the famous superhero has more important matters to attend to than rescuing his protégée from a couple of kidnappers. But still… rude. Peter kind of thought he’d be a higher priority.

And yeah, he’s almost an adult— he shouldn’t need rescuing, and he is definitely more than capable of taking a few (dozen) punches and some mediocre torture.

Peter’s just getting a bit tired, is all.

    Summary

The question trips out of his mouth like an accident, the same time as Tony speaks again.

    “What’s going on?”

“— I thought I knew everything about you.”

    Peter blinks. Blinks again.

His pseudo-father still looks like a wreck, just this time he could swear there are tears, and there’s one thing Tony doesn’t do and its cry so—

    “…you do—? I haven’t really hidden anything?”

(that’s a lie. there are certain things peter will never admit to. he just hopes that it’s not—)

“You were under a lot of anesthetic. Could’ve been the pain too, I guess.” His voice is hoarse. “I don’t know, really, but you were, uh. Pretty out of it. So.”

    Summary

Peter feels the unease for the first time in the middle of Mr. Stark's speech.

At first he assumes it's someone in the crowd, someone with a vendetta against Tony Stark. There's always someone with a vendetta against Tony Stark, someone planting a bomb under the podium he's speaking from, someone with a knife concealed under their clothes, someone sneaking in a can of red spray paint to write MERCHANT OF DEATH on the walls-

Peter is used to that. Those kinds of things activate his spidey-sense, give him time to intervene before anything can actually happen.

This sudden unease isn't his Spidey sense, though.

It's quiet. A whisper, more than a warning.
