Rey stares at him blankly, blinking at him as if deeply puzzled by his words, and then proceeds to look at him as if he’d just uttered the most nonsensical sentence he could ever come up with on such a short notice.
He feels like an idiot – what kind of deranged lunatic asks his girlfriend if she’s a vampire?
Then, just as he's about to tell her to ignore all of it, she speaks. “You're realizing it now?”
-- or: It takes Ben five months to realize that his girlfriend is a vampire, but he's surprisingly okay with it.

When Mike and El break up at the end of the summer before leaving for separate colleges, it’s Mike’s idea. He doesn’t want to hold her back with long distance. He wants her to experience college freely, even if it means letting her go.
Unfortunately, nobody warned him that watching his ex thrive on Instagram while pretending not to stalk her profile would be its own special kind of torture.
Now Mike’s finding increasingly pathetic excuses to text her every time she posts, and El (much to his frustration and relief) always texts him back.

Her breath stuttered in her chest. Four years. He’d held those words on his lips and in his heart for four years, refusing to tell her goodbye.
She had feared bitterness from him, or anger, or something, anything, that would come between them, because something always came between them, didn’t it?
But in his first words to her, he had cut through every fear, every obstacle. It was as if he’d stepped through space and time and impossible heartbreak to say, I’m still here. I’ve been waiting. I never stopped loving you.
El and Mike try and fail, over the years, to find peace without each other, until El realizes enough is enough: she will find a way to bring Mike back into her life, no matter the cost.
