__________Charlie can’t actually remember the accident. The whole thing feels like a dream that slips away in the moments after waking up. He understands what happened, intellectually, but there’s no version of it in his mind he can actually recall. The flashes of memory he tries to grasp onto have no structure, nothing real or tangible. Geoff says he may refer him for EMDR therapy, “trauma doesn’t stay buried, Charlie.”
Charlie isn’t sure how to explain to Geoff that he might need EMDR therapy just to remember the past three weeks. Even now, he can barely recall how they got to the cemetery. He remembers his dad saying “It’s time” and now they’re here—four of them where there's meant to be five—sat next to a freshly carved headstone. He blinks, as if waking for the first time today.

Jake certainly doesn’t go to Florida with the intention of revisiting his decade-old weed habit. Jake goes to Florida with the intention of ignoring the marshal, finding Figgis, and getting the hell home. The problem is Florida is terrible— but terrible doesn’t really cut it. He tries to think of words better than “terrible” to describe the aching, gnawing fury inside him, the way the huge, empty house suffocates him, how the morning humidity tastes like exhaust fumes on his tongue. All he's come up with is really shitty and fucking miserable but still those lack the appropriate depth. Amy would know the perfect word.
