It’s a little like seeing a ghost at first.
Just a flash of something that Troy’s not 100% sure is really there. Catching his attention from the corner of his eye and inviting him to look a little closer instead of continuing his victory lap. To focus his energy instead on confirming what he’s sure can’t really exist.
He only glances up into the stands again for half a second, but it’s long enough for the smile to instantly fall from his face, stomach churning and eyes dampening as he tries to blink the sight away.
Because Curtis Barrett is packed in amongst the Vancouver fans. Dressed head-to-toe in the merchandise of his son’s current opponents, expression cold and focused entirely on Troy, barely-contained fury evident on his face even as the pair finally make direct eye contact.

For a moment, Johnny wasn’t sure what the exact sensation was. As she looked back at her own reflection in their mysterious herald's face, mouth hanging open slightly when it finally did click. That this wasn’t the same reflection that she had cringed away from each morning in the mirror for as long as she could remember.
Instead, it was framed by the shape of the face of the woman opposite her. Jaw less square than she had seen it before, and features softened by the slightly hazy sheen that was cast across the surfer’s skin.

Eddie's brows knit together as he sweeps up his phone in one hand, almost dropping it again immediately when he sees the only face in the world that he’s been longing to speak to grinning up at him from the screen.
Trembling fingers tripping over one another to answer the call, barely registering in his mind the fact that the child on the other end should be well-asleep by now.
Not allowing the alarm bells ringing out in the back of his mind to overshadow how the speaker on his phone suddenly jumps to life, the crackle of static bleeding out into the kitchen as Eddie lifts the device to press up against his ear.
