Summary
Or, Benedict Bridgerton does not meet the love of his life at a masquerade ball. There is no Lady in Silver, no lost glove, and certainly no Cinderella story.
Instead Benedict finds himself in a questionable inn, drenched to the bone and exhausted. By the following night, he has somehow taken on the unenviable task of smuggling one Sophie Baek - potential fugitive, maid, and possible bane of his existence - into his home so that she could hide from her family until her ship to the Americas departs in a month.
Dodging one incessant mama, countless nosy siblings, and the trouble that dogs the Bridgerton family like a curse - Benedict is rapidly reaching the end of his patience.
But he is a gentleman. And he will see his promise through.

Sophie holds up her empty hands to show him.
“Oh,” the gentleman says. “That is… unlucky.”
There is another male voice from behind her, and a presence of someone on her left side as another gentleman joins them. “Lord Napier, forgive me for interrupting, but I have just found this young lady’s dance card.”
The new gentleman glances down at a dance card in his hand that is decidedly not the one poking into Sophie’s skin from inside her glove.
“But, unfortunately, my name is up next.”
Sophie’s soulmark burns.---
Or: Benedict and Sophie are Soulmates. This should make their lives easier. It does not.

When it was time for lunch, Alfie took off the netting he’d tied to the top of the jar and shook the butterfly out. It hovered for a moment between them, circling their heads once, twice, before finally lifting higher, disappearing into the wide stretch of sky above the fields.

She slowed, then stopped.
