Kip was reading, or trying to read, to distract himself from his self-pity and the silence of the Palace all but emptied for Silverheart, when the earthquake hit and he was plunged into unfathomable darkness.
Unfathomable, but not entirely unfamiliar. He was reminded of the time the rip current caught him, when he was twelve years old and trying to dive for a flame pearl against Buru Tovo's better judgment. Now, as then, he scrabbled for a grip on something, anything, as the darkness and the cold and the pressure intensified as he was swept down and down.
Now, as then, he did slam against something eventually, but this time it wasn't a rock.
