    Summary

“I wonder if they’ll be a bender.” All of his carefree attitude seemed to drain out of Aang; his shoulders drooped, his smile vanished, his eyes unfocused. Katara set down her cup of tea and grabbed his hand that still pressed against her stomach. The child inside of her shifted, as though reaching for the touch of their father, causing Aang to smile sadly. “I should want them to be an airbender.”

    “You don’t?” Katara asked, confused.

The traditions of the Southern Water Tribe were taught to their children, but so were the tenets of the Air Nomads. Their daughter followed Aang’s vegetarian diet and would sit by his side as he meditated. Yes, she would shift about and peek up at him, but she was an undeniable daddy’s girl that hung onto his every word. Bumi, their wild boy, loved stories of his father’s exploits from a hundred years ago, but he was a Water Tribe boy through-and-through.

She wanted for Aang to have another person in his life—that wasn’t a bison or a flying lemur—that could use the element of air.

    Summary

The spirits danced along in a myriad of colors against the sky about ten years after the end of the war.

“They disappeared, just a slow trickle, before they were all gone, nowhere to be seen,” his Gran Gran had told him once when he was child as the hearth of coals radiated heat towards where their family was bundled close together to keep warm in the winter chill. “They're mourning us and the slow decline of who we once were. We used to dance and sing with the spirits, they were so beautiful.” Sokka had closed his eyes that night and tried to dream about what the spirits could look like.

Never had he dreamed of what it truly looked like.

    Summary

Aang’s chest had been tight with worry for weeks now, so tight it felt like he was carrying a heavy weight everywhere he went, and he knew Katara felt it too, the same quiet concern etched into the soft lines around her eyes when she watched their little boy.

Everyone they spoke to, parents who’d raised multiple children, older couples who’d seen it all kept telling them it was normal. “Kids suck their thumbs until they’re five, even older sometimes,” they’d say with gentle smiles, trying to ease their minds. “Bumi’s only four, there’s nothing to fret over.”

But Aang couldn’t shake the feeling. He knew his son, knew how bright, how lively, how energetic he’d always been, even as a tiny baby. This wasn’t just a harmless habit. It was different, deeper, something that twisted at his heart every time he looked at Bumi.

    Summary

“I’m almost done! It’s just one sleeve!”

    “No, Baba!”

“Are you losing an argument to our one-year-old son again?”

Aang turned to see Katara watching the two of them from bed, her voice only lightly touched by sleep. The look in her eyes was pure love.

    “I’m not losing, I’m—yes.”

Now that Bumi is over a year old, Katara and Aang decide it's high time they took a trip to the South Pole to properly introduce him to the rest of his family.

Everything goes perfectly to plan. All Aang has to do is stop imagining the many different ways a rambunctious toddler could fall off a flying bison.
