Summary
All Lauma can see is Nefer being flung like a ragdoll from Rerir’s abyssal domain, slumping to the ground, unmoving. Lauma cries out, but she is too far away. She can't even tell if Nefer is breathing. The battle rages on around them, but nothing else matters. There's only Nefer, the blood pooling around her, and the impassable distance between them.

“Speaking of your employees, where’s Ashru? He didn’t greet me today.” Lauma calls out Ashru’s name a couple times and waits for a response. Whatever she hears has her laughing.
“Ashru would like me to inform you that while he won’t refuse the new treats, he vastly prefer the old ones. Please place an order for him.”
Nefer rolls her eyes. “Please inform him that he can take what’s offered or find another place of employment. Perhaps he’ll be able to negotiate for the correct treats there.”

“I know what mistletoe signifies,” Ineffa said calmly.

Slowly, as not to awaken the other occupant of the bed, Jahoda turned on her side to just…look.
She simply couldn’t take her eyes off because despite the clear metal and the faint sound of machines humming instead of an actual breath, Ineffa really looked so human. Her cheek was mushed against the pillow and there was the tiniest bit of droll at the edge of her bottom lip and her breast was squished between her chest and the mattress and her bent knee was placed so far up the bed that Jahoda had to move just so to place her hand on the mechanical joint.

"I'm... I'm just gonna go," Nefer murmured, her voice softer than Lauma expected, almost too soft, like a whisper. Nefer was clearly trying to pull away, retreat into herself again, the way she always had.
It wasn’t like her to leave so abruptly. There was something she wasn’t saying - perhaps relating to the packages on the ground. Lauma could feel it in her bones, the unspoken words hanging heavy in the air. Nefer didn’t truly want to leave; she was just too stubborn to admit she wanted to stay.
"You can’t go home this late, Nefer," Lauma said, her voice firm, but not harsh. To Nefer's dismay, it lacked the softness it once had.
"It’s far too late to be out on your own," continued Lauma. "You should at least have something to eat. I once told you that Hiisi would always welcome you. I do not intend to retract that statement."
A year after their breakup, Nefer finds her way to Lauma's hometown with the simple mission of delivering ungifted presents.

Her eyes closed, Ei took a controlled breath.
Her hand tightened ever so slightly around her Naginata as she slowly raised it in front of herself.
Not even the blink of a mortal’s eye passed when Ei suddenly opened her own ones and lunged forward to strike.
Quick, precise, fluid and clean – she had already ran through the same drill over and over again in her mind. Perfecting it, burning it into her mind so her body would easily follow.
And even though all martial art originated with her and Ei was already a Master of it all, she would always continue to hone her skills, to develop and redevelop.
And she would refine both movement and weaponry as she would see fit. As she would have to in order to slay even the most powerful gods to become a threat to Inazuma.
Ei stopped.
Closing her eyes again. Once more running through the movements in her mind again. Had they felt unnatural or choppy at some point? Was there a need to improve the stances?
Theory didn’t always fully translate into practice after all.
But before she could start her musings again, Ei snapped her eyes open once more.
An ambush?
