    Frodo grasped Pippin's wrist, bracketed by Sam and Merry. Moving as one, the four bounded together to form a pack of rabbits, slipping to and fro between the building battle. Merry, instinctively, pelted a large rock at a Warg's eye with a cry as it came too close — it reared its ugly head, falling in line for Aragorn's Andrúil to pierce it through.

    'Good aim,' he panted, carding the hair back from his eyes, 'We shall make you a slingshot yet.'

    'A bow may suit him!' Came Legolas' bird-song call from above. His shadow spun a swift curvet against the coming dark, silver hair gleaming with the last vestiges of marigold skies. 'Alas, we could bear another archer!'

    'You would want that, wouldn't you?' Gimli shouted.

    The Company are ambushed by a clever pack of Wargs. Legolas does not know this woods well enough, until he does.

    Legolas has not slept in a very long time.

    Rather, he hasn’t rested in a very long time - properly rested, let his body sink into slumber like it so desperately craves to now. His few moments of reverie are the darkest hours of the night, the few times his fellow travellers take night watch.

    His body is unaffected by the long stretches of consciousness. His arrows fly as true as always, and his movements never slow, but even Gimli has begun giving him strange looks.

    Gimli!

    Fool of a Took seemed to be the enduring muttered mantra of the Fellowship, at least where Gandalf was concerned. It was entirely possible that the others thought it in their hearts– certainly not his fellow hobbits, but perhaps the Men that were sworn to follow Frodo into fire and flames, the grumbling dwarf, and the strange elf who spoke rarely and blinked even less. Pippin tried not to let it prick his heart: he knew this quest was something far beyond his understanding of the world, knew that truly realizing it would warp his brain in ways that could not be undone, knew that, after all, he was just a simple hobbit who had quite literally stumbled into saving the world. He could quell the pinpricks with those thoughts.

    Before Moria, of course. Before knocking the helmet down the well. Before the balrog. 

    (In which Legolas has a bad time, Pippin has even worse time, and the Fellowship finally gets around to talking about the balrog incident, though not before Legolas and Pippin run into trouble in the woods.)
