“’Morning,” Mike grumbled, voice low from sleep.
“Noon,” Max corrected, as if she hadn’t only woken up thirty minutes before him.
“Wow,” he replied, squinting at the light. “Nobody thought to wake me?”
It happened casually after that, so casually it almost didn’t register at first. El laughed at something Lucas said, then turned toward Mike and leaned in, instinctively, easily, pressing a kiss to his lips like it was the most logical way to say good morning to him.

Or: Mike and Will have been together for a year and a half when El comes back. The problem is, El assumes she and Mike are still together. The bigger problem is that Mike doesn’t realize Will thinks he might choose her.

““I’m sorry,” he said into the other’s neck where his head was resting. “I didn’t mean to make everyone worried.”Mike pulled back just enough to look at him. “You think that’s what I’m upset about?” When Will didn’t answer, he exhaled sharply. “I thought something happened. I thought you were hurt. Or- or that you left because of-” He cut himself off.
Will’s stomach dropped. Here it was. “It’s okay,” he said quickly, the words tumbling out. “You don’t have to explain. I get it.”
Mike frowned. “Get what?”
Will forced himself to pull his head away enough to meet his eyes. “You and El.”
Mike stared at him in confusion, then his entire face changed, as if he had realized something. “Will,” he said, almost incredulous. “No.”
“You don’t have to-”
“I broke up with her.””

Summary
Mike knew he was gross. He knew he smelled and was covered in sweat and that his hair was matted in places. But he just couldn’t bring himself to care anymore. Will didn’t. Will ran his fingers through his hair and kissed him softly. Will radiated warmth and made it all go away.
Mike stared at his wall, clutching one of Will’s shirts. His vision swirled, and spots bloomed at the corners of his eyes. Everything ached.
“I miss you,” Mike whispered into the nothingness. “I’ll be home soon.”
He closed his eyes. Sleep opened its kind arms to him.

"Mike, Will whispered, across the expanse of time and space. It felt impossible. Yet there he was.
Mike tried to make a noise, to call to him, to cry, but his voice failed him just as his breaths did. Stinging rolled over him in waves like Will’s breaths. Will’s fingertips ghosted across his lips, close, so close, so tangible.
Finally, time, like molasses, released its hold on him. Will grasped at his hair, his arms, his face. Mike gasped and held onto him like an anchor.
Are you real? Mike asked.
Yes, Will said.
The light swallowed them.

Summary
Mike stands a few feet away, shoulders squared, eyes locked on him with an intensity that makes Will’s breath catch. He looks nothing like the easy, grinning version he knows. This Mike is coiled tight, attention sharpened to a point, his presence radiating outward in a way that makes people instinctively give ground. For one wild second Will considers pretending he didn’t notice. He considers staying exactly where he is, letting the moment stand.
The loud growl answers that thought before he can act on it, and he feels it blaring in his ears despite the loud music. It’s low, controlled, furious in a way that doesn’t need volume.
The alpha in front of him freezes.

Summary
Will’s body is heavy as Mike drags him out of the quarry.
His lungs are burning and feel too small altogether, unable to hold any of the air he is trying to force into them. He can feel Will's hands slipping up his chest, the limp body sliding lower against his back. Mike hoists him up again, readjusting his grip. His nails dig into the other boys’ wrists a little tighter, breaking the soft and pale skin.
They are getting closer to the shore, Mike figures. His thoughts are sluggish, coming slow and hard to grasp. He only knows that he must get them out, the need to tend to Will growing, more urgent and all encompassing, entire body thrumming Will Will Will with every step he takes towards the bank.
The other boy is an increasingly grave weight on his back. Mike never wants to stop carrying it.
or: mike and will on their final mission in the upside-down. will experiences the horrors and falls off the cliff; mike, naturally, jumps after him.

Will lifts his eyes from the posters on his wall. He misses Bowie and The Cure during the split second his eyes take the road to Mike’s face. When they arrive at their destination, his heart trembles in his chest.
“I’m sorry,” he starts. Eyes still wide and sad. “Don’t be mad at me anymore, I can’t stand it.”
Maybe Will should feel bad for making his boyfriend go through such an emotional turmoil. But when Mike looks at him like this and uses this voice, he can’t hold himself back from enjoying all it. The concept of guilt be damned.
He has the audacity to push it too.

There’s something wrong with Will.
It started three weeks ago, almost four. Will had woken from some sort of nightmare and, instead of seeking comfort in Mike the way he usually would, he’d rolled out a sleeping bag from the closet and chosen to sleep on the floor.
No one believes Mike, except for Joyce. But even she doesn’t understand the full extent to which something is wrong with Will.
Mike understands, though. Mike has been paying attention.

Summary
At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

"Hi!" Mike chirps back, unable to help the lovesick smile that spreads across his face.
"Guess what?" Will says, bouncing in place.

Mike hums to himself, pretending to think but really just taking a moment to take in the sight of Will on his phone screen. He looks so soft. Will is wearing the same outfit as Mike's lock screen. The same plain white t-shirt and soft gray sweats. It makes Mike want to wrap him up in a blanket and hide him away in his den.
