“How long has he been gone?” He snapped. Molly looked up.
“About five hours, why?” She seemed to expect an explanation. He didn’t bother giving her one. He needed to move quickly, if there was any hope left. He shot into the bedroom at the end of the hall, John’s temporary one. It was eerily clean and empty. Perfectly made bed, pristine closet, the only disturbed thing was the desk. Crumpled sheets of paper littered the top, and an open newspaper. He read the papers first. They were all mostly blank, beginning with names. Mary, Sherlock, Molly. He caught the word ‘sorry’ in every single one. It was nearly all the confirmation he needed, but he stopped as he read the last one.or
After Mary’s death, Sherlock knows that John wants nothing to do with him. He stays away, dissolves into the quiet comfort of old vices and bad habits, hoping it’ll dull everything enough for the persistent feelings to disappear. He’s not supposed to have those.
He stays away, until he doesn’t.
But when he finally works up the nerve to go looking for John, he deduces that something much worse has gone wrong.

“ Are we becoming friends now?” Ilya asks. Shane looks turned out by the question, again looking around for someone.
“ Uh-” He stumbles, “ Yeah.”
“ Wow.” Ilya gasps; it's in a similar manner he remembers checking out Shane in the car, like he can’t believe the man in front of him is real. He and Shane continue walking, or Shane continues, and Ilya runs to keep up.
“ You know, “ Ilya starts, “ You might be the first attractive person I have not wanted to sleep with in my entire life.”
He hears a sharp and quiet intake of breath from Shane beside him, and then he breathes out a laugh, “ That's great, Ilya.” He says.
