He looks at Aerion, resplendent and armed and entirely without need of him, the small, priceless, dark, glittering jewel burning cold at his ear and his throat bare and unclaimed above it, and he thinks that of all the shining company gathered in this hall, the one thing not a soul here has the least use for is the one thing Dunk knows how to be.

How long had this been going on? Three years? Six years? Aerion remembered perfectly the day this huge but devilishly handsome guy first got behind the wheel of his car. Since then, or maybe even earlier, Aerion had lost his peace. He, who was used to getting everything with a snap of his fingers, had for the first time in his life run into an impenetrable wall. And what was the worst — sincere indifference. Duncan was the son of their old driver. Since childhood, Aerion had been used to seeing him only occasionally, but he would forever remember this figure in a large coat, hunched over the trunk in the frosty air of the motor pool. While little Aerion, wrapped in cashmere, impatiently waited for the cabin to warm up, the boy everyone called Dunk sat in the front seat, squeezed into the corner, looking anywhere but at Aerion.
