Summary
A thought intrudes, that maybe Magnus is more distant from his husband’s Institute than is ideal. Institutes are usually run by a pair of married Shadowhunters —as even Magnus knows— and while obviously he couldn’t (and wouldn’t want to) be recognized by the Clave or Council in any official manner, it’s possible there are ways he could help, could be here for Alec regardless?
Magnus observes Alec training his people, and while he's mostly there to enjoy the view, he can't help but wonder if maybe they still need to work on that balance between them a little, knowing how much of their work can be shared, and how much of it they should.

It’s the last thing Alec expects to hear in the protracted silence after their lovemaking. He can still feel the echoes of Magnus’ lips on his skin, although the hum of satisfaction has faded from his body.
(Or, Magnus regales Alec with an ugly tidbit from his past after their fight about the strand of Magnus' hair.)

Magnus come to the Institute to try and fix a problem in the wards at the demands of Maryse and Robert Lightwood. He'd never expected to instead find himself making a friend with one of the first dragons spotted in the North Americas in over three hundred years. A young dragon on their own, clearly without someone to guide them, and who had, for some reason or another, chosen to make the New York Institute their home.

Magnus used to think that the most difficult thing he would ever do was say goodbye to his husband. He used to think that, having dealt with Alec's death, he would be better prepared to lose his son. He realizes now that he couldn't have been more wrong. Watching his son grow old and die opens him up to a whole new type of pain, and he doesn't know if he can survive this one.
