Summary
“I’ve been poisoned, I’m afraid.”
It takes William a moment to parse that, because it sounds like Tharkay has just said he’d been poisoned, which is patently unlikely. They are retired. They’re living in a quiet country estate, with a housekeeper and a valet who keeps trying to polish Tharkay’s shoes against his will.
Upon seeing Tenzing clearly, he promptly bellows out, “Mrs. Hentshire, call for a doctor!”
“No need for such theatrics, Will,” Tharkay says, face waxy and pale compared to his normal complexion. “My dear cousin Ambrose has simply finally found his stones amongst his cowardice.” He smiles with his teeth.(Post series, Tharkay and Laurence are settling into their odd life together in the Scottish estate, when an attempt on Tenzing's life throws things out of balance.)
