Work Text:
Large scale attacks weren't as common as you mightve thought.
Usually a casual hero on patrol would get a couple of small villains, mainly looking for attention from the public eye, rarely a large villain. Usually those types of enemies require backup heroes to take down, but still nothing major.
But large-scale attacks? That's a whole other story.
Recently a new team of small scale villains got together to make quirk reducing machines and gadgets. Once other villains caught word of their work, these gadgets were spreading all over Japan like wildfire. Who knows how long it would take to reach other countries?
That's where the heroes come in; they're here to make sure these devices stay in Japan and are under control.
Nasty day outside.
It was raining, but not enough to storm. Just drizzling the entire day.
Everything was gloomy, and nobody had the energy to do anything. It was midweek, and UA was still.
Teachers taught their students in their classrooms, while a certain handful of teachers met in principle nezu's office for an emergency meeting.
"Thank you all for coming. I have a very important mission I need you all for tonight. Unfortunately, it is the middle of the week, but this crisis will not wait for classes to be out for the weekend." Nezu greeted.
In his office stood Midnight, Cementoss, Present Mic, Ectoplasm, Vlad King, Eraserhead and Snipe. All of their classes had either been canceled or subbed already.
"We've recently been able to locate a warehouse used to keep all the quirk limiting devices that have been passing around Japan as of recently. Over thousands in stock in that single warehouse. We have heroes locating any other warehouses containing these devices, but as of now, this is the only warehouse we're aware of." Nezu explained.
Each teacher listened as nezu explained. They all collectively knew it wasn't gonna be that easy. There's always a catch in these sorts of missions.
"No students will accompany you. We do not fully know the extent of this mission, nor the villains you will face. More pros will assist you, but this group is the vast majority." Nezu continued.
"So where's the warehouse?" Vlad king interrupted.
"Yeah, and what are we supposed to do with the devices?" Present mic added to vlad's question.
"These trackers will assist you during your mission." Nezu handed each hero a small tracking device that could clip onto their waistbands.
"When it's time to start your mission, I will send direct coordinates of the warehouse to each of your trackers. You can see eachother on the tracker, but nobody else. Only can you see a person on the tracker if they possess a tracker themselves. Our heroes that discovered the warehouse have done a scan from a distance of most the items and have deemed them tame enough to destroy. None of the devices should damage the surrounding area if destroyed, but no promises; as this is short of a notice. We need to rid these villains of these devices as soon as possible. Do your best, everybody. We're all counting on you." Nezu told the heroes. They all flowed out of the office and awaited coordinates.
They all stood around the perimeter of the UA highschool, waiting. Present mic decided he'd spark some convo to pass the time.
"How's 1-B doing vlad? You got some pretty good kids in there." He said, sitting on a bench with one leg balanced on the other.
"They are good. They are all excellent. Not some 'pretty good,' thanks for asking." Vlad spit back, standing beside the bench Mic sat on.
"Excellent.. eraser! 1-A drove you to insanity yet?" Present mic changed the subject.
"They're- good." Aizawa answered, sitting next to mic on the opposite side of the bench. Present mic awkwardly smiled with the ecstatic replies he had gotten from both homeroom teachers.
"You teach English to 1-A, don't you Mic? How is that class?" Cementoss chirped in.
"Oh- they're quite the handful! I don't get how eraser does it all the time! He has some good kids, though. They're all going to be great heroes." Mic stated.
"Agreed. That class has some spark in it. I can definitely see some of them rising to the top when they get older." Midnight added, standing behind the bench Eraserhead and Present mic sat on.
Just as the conversation had risen from the dumps, their trackers beeped all together, showing the coordinates of the fabled warehouse.
Once coordinates were given, they all left UA and started their journey to the warehouse. To avoid being seen, nobody drove to the location. It wasn't too far away, but far enough to be away from the city. As our heroes approached the coordinates given, more pros that nezu had mentioned joined their journey.
The group slowed down once they got close enough to be spotted. They split up and fanned out around the perimeter of the warehouse.
Around it were some wired fences, abandoned cars, broken down sheds, and many gravel paths.
Each teacher had an intercom device already with them prior to nezu's meeting. Some had grabbed extra for their new additions to the group so they all could communicate well.
"Any sign of anybody outside the warehouse?" Midnight tapped into the headset.
"I dont see anyone on the northeast side." Eraserhead stated.
"Nobody on the southeast." Vlad king spoke.
"None on the southwest side, either. I think we're good to enter." Present mic added.
"Agreed, advancing forward." Snipe spoke into the channel.
All heroes closed inward on the fence surrounding the warehouse. They waited for anybody to jump out at them, but when nothing did, they continued inward. Our heroes jumped the fence and advanced inward carefully.
"Any sign of anything yet?" Midnight asked.
"Nothing yet." Snipe confirmed.
"Wait. I'm seeing movement." Eraserhead spoke, and everyone froze.
After a second of silence, someone couldn't take the quiet anymore.
"Are you sure it wasn't one of us?" Mic asked.
"Vlad!" Snipe yelled from the far side of the warehouse. Immediately our heroes started towards the yelling, but haulted when Snipe spoke on the headset.
"Everybody keep your guard up, they got one of the devices onto Vlad and I. They're quick, watch your back!" He warned, and almost instantly, the rest of our heroes were ambushed. The pros fought the villains, attempting to trap them with their gadgets off in a matter of seconds.
"We're running out of time. They're loading up vans full of 'em! I'm going in!" Mic announced to the intercom before shoving his way into the warehouse.
"Mic! Wait!" Aizawa yelled, fighting off his attackers.
"I'll assist you!" Cementoss yelled, before molding the ground to give mic a bridge over the wave of villains to the mountains of boxes. Using his voice, Mic was able to take out a lot of the devices in one shot. But the villains waiting inside did not take this lightly.
I suppose the villains outside were more like bait than anything, because the ones waiting inside the warehouse were not playing around.
Present mic charged up another voice boom, but was tackled off the bridge and to the ground by a villain with spider-like legs growing from his back.
Upon contact with the ground, his directional speaker shattered around his neck.
Mic instantly started internally panicking over this villain's arachnid legs, and his directional speaker; that too. Before either of them could make a move, a wall of cement was thrown at the villain by cementoss, completely saving mic's ass.
Cementoss ran over to mic to check over his colleague for injuries. Mic ripped off his shredded directional speaker and threw it on the ground beside them.
"No use anymore." Mic said. Cementoss offered him a hand, and he took it, standing up. Looking around, Snipe, vlad, Midnight, rock lock, ectoplasm, ryukyu and eraserhead had made their way inside and now stood alongside the two.
Infront of the heroes stood mountains and mountains of boxed up gear, and in front of that stood all the villains that had been assisting in this massive project.
"You're too late, heroes. We've already spread all over Japan. There's no stop to this now." The villains snarled.
"No, but we can decrease it significantly." Midnight responded and signaled for the heroes to advance.
Ryukyu morphed into her dragon form and started moving past the villains to the boxes almost immediately. She was able to destroy a good amount of the boxes with what little time she had. Some quirks these villains had were enhanced by something and they were able to easily stop her tantrum.
Ectoplasm struck next. Multiplying himself, he stuck with about 20 clones and attempted to take down the villains lined up. One villain was quicker, though, and was able to wrap some type of fabric around him, which made his clones almost immediately disappear.
Eraserhead fought a group of about 7 villains who were attempting to get a device around him. He certainly wasn't losing, but he would definitely need help soon.
Cementoss fought his best by manipulating the ground under the villains and gadgets, but a villain with a flight quirk was able to easily lock a device onto his wrists, instantly canceling his quirk. Cementoss did not want to give up yet, so he attempted to use his quirk again, but was shocked immediately by the restraints on his wrists.
"Dont let them get a limiter on you! If you use your quirk with one on, it'll only harm yourself more!" Eraserhead yelled from his fighting circle.
Rock lock helped present mic get above the villains by locking items in the air for mic to use as steps. Once he got up to the top, he took a large breath in, but was instantly grabbed by a winged villain.
"Mic!" Rock lock yelled for him, but was soon bombarded by villains on the ground as well.
Mic fought his captor midair, and eventually squirmed his way free, crashing to the hard cement floor of the warehouse. Mic quickly got back up and used his quirk, but it came with a harsh burning sensation around his throat. He looked down to find a reducer had been locked around his neck by the winged villain. Before he could react, the winged villain took another swing and knocked mic off his feet. Mic flipped backward and landed on his stomach on the cold floor. Rising slightly from the floor breathlessly, he looked around for his colleagues. Cementoss and ectoplasm sat next to eachother on the ground, both caught by the devices.
They had struck Vlad king and Snipe at the beginning of the battle, so they could not advance further.
Looking over, ryukyu and rock lock had both just had devices locked around them as well.
Hoping for anything positive, mic looked around desperately for his two best friends. He found Midnight, lying on her stomach a little way in front of him, with a device around her neck.
It can't be this hopeless, can it?
Aizawa still fought, but he was losing quickly.
Mic watched as his husband was held by three villains and caught by the same device ectoplasm had been caught in.
This was it.
We lost.
He looked forward as the villains laughed in front of them.
"That was almost insultingly easy! I can't believe we just took down nine pro heroes all by ourselves!" The winged villain chuckled.
"I can't believe you thought you'd actually win this. You were severely outnumbered." Another villain chimed in, insulting the heroes that sat in front of them.
Mic wouldn't let this be the outcome.
We had to finish what we came here to do.
"Seriously! And now look how weak they all are without their quirks." Another villain grinned.
Mic couldn't help but feel like this was his fault.
I rushed in here before everyone else was ready. We could've won this if I had waited for a clear to move inside.
Wait a second-
Mic thought.
Earlier before I knew I had this thing on me, I could still use my quirk.. but not well.
But I can still use it!
Mic tensed himself before sparking conversation.
"You celebrate too early." Mic spoke.
"Mic, what are you doing?" Aizawa whispered aggressively.
"Relax." Mic said to his husband.
"You think we haven't won? All of you are here lying on the floor, quirkless! And we still have some stock left! We might've lost a good amount of the devices, but I wouldn't say that's enough to call this a loss!" The villain said, grabbing mic's face while he talked. He pushed mic away from him when he finished.
"I wouldn't say quirkless." Mic responded, sitting on his knees.
"Mic, no." Midnight told him.
"Mic, it's too risky-" Cementoss whispered.
"Oh really? And why not?" The villain spat at the voice hero.
"Cuz I can still do this-" mic started, and finished with his most powerful scream yet. He tried his best to steer the direction of his quirk straight ahead so not to hurt his friends too much, but enough to knock out the wall behind the stock of boxes.
It wasn't his most powerful level because of the reducer around his neck, but it was still powerful enough to knock away everyone in his path.
Using his quirk distracted him from the hellish burn emitting onto his neck from the gadget. His colleagues noticed before he could.
"Hizashi stop!" Aizawa tried to yell, but it was like he didn't even say anything with how powerful hizashi's quirk was working right now. He could see the frying of his husband's skin from under the device growing.
Mic must've hit the villain with the remote to stop these things because all the devices suddenly clicked and fell off, their quirks returning. Before mic's quirk could return to his normal power instead of the restrained version he was using right now, aizawa activated his quirk. Mic was being too self- sacrificing for his liking.
Mic's voice cut out, and he noticed and stopped trying to use his quirk. As soon as he stopped, the dizziness and pain caught up with him. He swayed to the side, and the ground came way too close for comfort.
Aizawa was by his side in a millisecond, catching him before he could hit the ground. Soon after, all of his colleagues also crowded around him to see him better.
The skin where the device used to be clasped around now sizzled and bubbled. Aizawa held his husband's head in his lap, making sure not to come in contact with the skin on the back of his husband's throat.
"I'm getting paramedics here ASAP. Sit tight, yamada." Midnight said, tapping his chest while she spoke on the phone. She got up and walked away, she couldn't stand to stare at her best friend like this for another second.
Aizawa's blood bubbled with anger. It enraged him that these villains brought his husband to this, that they got the upper hand in this fight, but also angry at the man lying in his lap. Angry that he would ever get this self destructive willingly.
"Present mic." Rock lock mumbled, catching the voice heros dazed attention. "Thank you."
All the other heroes that had worked on this mission were very thankful for present mic right now. This would've been a failed mission if not for his last-ditch effort.
"Thank you, mic." Cementoss thanked.
The rest of the heroes there thanked mic for what he had done.
Mic weakly nodded in an effort to say 'you're welcome.'
Soon, authorities and paramedics all arrived at the scene to help with any cleanup or repairs. They were instantly huddled around the heroes, especially present mic. They lifted him carefully and transported the voice hero to a stretcher.
Aizawa didn't fight them, they know what they're doing. He figured he would get back to UA and drive himself to the hospital.
They got mic on the way to the hospital and started checking over the other heroes on scene.
Most heroes had minor injuries, mostly from the close combat fighting. All heroes were bleeding from the ears, but no permanent damage was received. Cementoss had some burning around his wrists from his device, but that was the worst of the heroes left on the scene.
Once paramedics had checked over each of the heroes, they started moving out of the area. Authorities had checked over the damage done to the surrounding area, nothing too bad.
There's a large hole in the wall and roof of the warehouse from where mic's quirk had activated.
Luckily, the voice hero knew what he was doing and could avoid any surrounding forest with his quirk. They had also taken a couple of vans loaded with the devices out in the fight. The heroes had destroyed the control device for these quirk limiters, so it rendered the rest useless.
All villains that were caught in present mic's range suffered mild injuries, besides the villain that had been standing the closest to mic. He'd be down and out for a long time.
All the heroes were transported back to UA with the paramedics, as they had all walked to the warehouse.
Once back to the campus, nezu awaited their arrival at the front gates.
"Congratulations everybody! We thank you so much for everything you've done for Japan today!" Nezu said.
The teachers greeted nezu and entered the school gates.
Once out of the paramedic car, aizawa headed straight for his car. Nemuri caught up with him and insisted that she join him. They both hopped in the car and drove straight to the heroes hospital.
Once they got there, upon walking in, the hospital staff knew exactly who the two were and who they were here for.
"This is present mic's room. He just received pain medication via IVs, so he might be pretty tired. But you're welcome to visit him." The nurse opened the door to the hospital room for the two heroes and they walked in.
On the bed was hizashi, in a hospital gown and his long hair sprawled all over the pillow that lay behind him. They wrapped his neck in a thick dry sterile dressing, and he had several IVs running from his wrists and arms. He laid still, chest rising and falling slowly. His eyes were barely open, but the heroes could see him watch as they walked in.
"Yamada-" Nemuri started, but was cut off by the man that lay in the hospital bed.
'Can't hear, hearing aids are on table' mic weakly signed to the two.
"Oh- here." Nemuri said, grabbing his hearing aids and putting them in for her friend.
'Thank you' mic signed.
"You scared us shitless! Don't do that, dammit!" Nemuri jumped forward to lean over the railing of the bed and hug her injured friend. She made sure to avoid his throat in her embrace.
'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to give you a scare like that' he signed when she pulled away. He looked at his friend and wiped the tears that were already streaming down her face.
"Bullshit." Aizawa said sharply, still standing in the same place he was when the nurse closed the door. He had his arms crossed while he stood and stared at his husband.
'Aizawa, I-' he tried to sign, but his husband interrupted.
"You knew what those devices did! I warned you not to use your quirk! What you did was extremely reckless, and you had us all terrified." Aizawa scolded. Yamada sat and listened to his husband, and so did nemuri.
"Aizawa, calm down. He's in no shape to be yelled at right now." Nemuri tried to calm him.
"No, because I warned him! You even tried stopping him as well, but he didn't listen! Hizashi, for all you knew, that thing could've killed you instantly! But all that you were worried about was finishing the mission." Aizawa said, throwing his hands in the air for emphasis.
'Was the mission successful?' Yamada signed.
"..Yes. But that's besides the point." Aizawa argued.
'And did anyone die?' Mic signed.
"I mean-" aizawa tried.
"Did anyone die, eraser?" Nemuri continued for mic.
"No. Nobody died." Aizawa sighed.
'Therefore, the mission was successful, nobody died, and we're all fine!' Mic signed to his husband.
Aizawa smiled slightly and pulled up a chair on the other side of mic's bed, opposite of nemuri.
"So.. did the doctors tell you that you can't use your voice for a while?" Nemuri asked.
'Yeah.. I also really hurt when I use my voice, so I just prefer to use my hands.' Mic signed.
"Good. The doctors said your quirk will be fine and so will you. 3rd degree burns all around your neck, but it'll heal. Leave you with a sick ass scar as well." Nemuri told him.
Hizashi smiled at the last remark, then felt a very light pressure on the side of his neck.
Looking to the side, he saw aizawa staring at the gauze around his neck, lightly hovering his hand next to it.
Aizawa cried little, barely at all. Shit, yamada had only seen him cry maybe once and even then it wasn't but a couple of tears and that was it.
He wasn't crying, but yamada definitely knew that look.
That look.
That look when eri was first adjusting to her life with him and aizawa, and was terrified of hurting them. This young girl, terrified of her quirk.
That look when young shinsou returned home from school in tears because the other kids were calling him names. Awful names, because of his quirk.
That look.
Yamada took his husband's hand from his neck and into his own hand.
Yamada knew his husband hated it when someone he loved was in pain because of a power they didn't ask for.
Because aizawa knew exactly what it felt like.
Aizawa looked at his husband with that same expression, and yamada wanted to scream about how amazing his husband was. How excellent of a teacher he was. How amazing a father and husband he had been. How he was the bravest and strongest hero yamada had ever met.
But his scorched throat wouldn't allow it.
"I'm alright, shota. I'm okay." Hizashi croaked out. It was like a dam that had just collapsed from the drop of a single stone.
As soon as the last word left his mouth, tears finally streamed down aizawa's face. He immediately leaned forward and hugged his husband's chest, hiding his now drenched face.
"You two are so cute!" Nemuri cried, sobbing loudly and joining their hug.
They were okay.
