Chapter Text
In this world, even though it is spherical, it is governed based on a triangle, a rigid triangle of rules, the second gender is the most important thing for all people in the world.
At birth, your family celebrated that it was a girl because that would save the family heritage that is bathed in gold, from an alpha father and a beta mother you came out, a healthy and safe baby, with all possible comforts.
You still didn't know how to speak when your close family raised theories of what you would be in the future, your mother assured you that you would be a pretty omega who would have beautiful children to take care of, on the other hand, your father theorized that your serious countenance on your baby face meant a strong character, worthy of a beta.
You didn't know what they were talking about even when you started to walk and babble words, the world was still vast and unknown, you didn't care what you would be when you grew up, as long as you had your parents you would be fine.
But the older you got the more you knew that subject would never escape your sight, you received lessons from your teachers on the subject in general, your parents talked often along with their other rich friends, betting among themselves who would be their children, who to marry whom, you watched them silently trying to decipher what the heck they were talking about.
Your parents did not let you out of the residential area, protecting you from whatever was outside the metal barriers, the first years of your life the only thing you know are the big houses, with gigantic yards where you played, you are content with not going out, as your parents say, you are a very valuable puppy for this world , you do not know why but still you feel happy for their words.
Although you were not allowed to go out, you were not completely alone, you quickly joined the small group of children your age, where they spent every day playing or doing whatever activity they could think of. You even played with your neighbor who was not part of the group, the other children did not accept him, but for you, he was great at playing. Those days you remember with joy, when you nor your friends were unscented, where you barely got used to other people's smells, some were so sensitive to smells, while others handled them well, every time you went to places unknown to you nose, you sneezed.
At ten years old, smells became more common and easier to distinguish, but you still didn't give up your habit of a sensitive nose. At this age the clues of what you would be in the future slowly peeked out, at this age, each friend in the group had an idea of what they would be.
Pinky Gauthier wanted to be an omega, with her incessant tantrums of wanting to be the princess at playtime, incredibly weak when they fought affectionately, she was the first to pick up her scent leaning towards something sweet, recognizing that it was quite an omega smell, sometimes you would joke with her that it didn't assure her of being an omega, she could easily try to be a beta just to annoy her, you would laugh at her grumbles.
In the group, it didn't matter who would be the first to present themselves but who would present themselves as an alpha. You and Pinky didn't care about that, but apparently, for the boys it did, being alpha meant a lot of things in this world, but at that age, you still didn't fully understand it, you just listened to your friends chattering about who would be the alpha of this newly made pack .
Another interesting bet within the group is that it would be you in particular, you are the only one who has not presented signs of a smell, smelling of absolutely nothing, and although it was contemplated that you were going to be an omega like Pinky according to your mother, your father, and your friends sensed otherwise. You behaved differently than Pinky or the average omega, you liked to bite, bite with anger, bite with affection, as a warning, you didn't let other kids intimidate you, and you didn't mind being seen as a savage when it came to protecting your friends, you almost ripped an arm off a kid who wanted to hit your neighbor, sometimes you were not affected by other people's dominant voices, you acted on impulse, that behavior was not of an omega, it was more of a possible beta or an alpha , but the chances of being an omega were there.
You and Pinky were secretly betting that Bif Taylor would become an alpha, that even though as a boy his build was small his protective attitude was obvious, but surprisingly the first one to come forward was Derby Harrington at age twelve, bragging to everyone that his genetics are much better than everyone else's, but the bragging didn't go that far because when his smell got so strong in your system you ran out to vomit, you weren't prepared for the alpha smell of one of your best friends, you were used to less forceful smells, hence the inside joke that Derby makes people vomit.
After Derby became the alpha of the group, the next one to present himself was Bif as a beta (something his family didn't like), after weeks everyone in the group had already presented themselves, even your neighbor turned out to be an Alpha just like Derby. Pinky was an omega as she always wished and the others were betas, except you.
You waited for it, you did, but months and years went by, no sign of a real presentation, you haven't gotten a real smell, and by that time you think there's a problem with you, why can't you be like your friends and have presentation yourself? you've already turned 15 and you still don't know what the heck you are.
Your parents have hired the best doctors to analyze you, to find out if there is a problem in your system, they did too many tests, and they only came to one conclusion, your body was fighting with its system, adapting to present itself but delaying your physical maturation. The doctors said that this was a common thing , that at any moment you would present yourself.
If only you had known what it would mean to have your presentation, you would have preferred to live without a smell.
Things got complicated or rather interesting when your group started attending Bullworth Academy, leaving behind Old Bullworth Vale where your safe place was where you had lived your childhood. Your parents took it upon themselves to send you to this school that although probably not the best you will be close to your group, where you can be safe, they are aware that if they separate you from your friends you will become depressed, affecting your health and therefore your presentation process.
The whole group started to use the suppressors because of school obligations, even you, who did not use them since you have no smell, only stopped using them when there were no classes or when you were outside the school. Bullworth itself was a whole new world of different people and smells, now and then you scratched your nose but you were no longer overwhelmed by the smells like when you were a child. The school in short is complete chaos you have to go through several events to know how to take care of yourself at school, being mainly inhabited by beta males.
In the beginning, you stood out for being a teenage student without smell, at your age everyone had already been presented, and the only ones who had no smell were the first-year students being practically children, you felt embarrassed by that fact, but you did not let that make you sad, if someone yelled at you a freak or without smell, you would most likely give him warning glances and let him know that you are not afraid of him. In this place, there is no place for the weak.
You try to give a stern face to anyone hostile to you and your group, almost getting physical, to reassure you you have to sniff one of your pack, Derby every week demands you rub your neck with his so you 'don't stress' when you know he does it to mark you no matter what you tell him his scent can't permeate you, but he ignores you by tightening his grip even more.
You thought you were going to be exiled from the group knowing that you are not presented, but the bond between your friends seems to be so strong that it didn't affect them, believing that you were going to present yourself sooner or later, Derby being the one in charge has you as his predestined Omega , mentioning that your parents and his are already in talks for marry you, that doesn't scare you since that subject has been instilled in you since you were little, but you don't want them to choose your partner either.
Anyway, if it wouldn't be Derby it would be another of your friends, Gord is one of the most affectionate, when it's not Derby cuddling with you it's Gord who demands your attention, his scent is less strong than Derby's, a delicate Beta scent that also reassures you because you've smelled him since he presentation himself.
But even if you have your clique with you, it doesn't mean that everything is rosy, not everyone is comfortable with a person without smell.
You open your locker to arrange some books you took from the library, today you have math and geography so you take out your books without being aware of your surroundings, inside the main building the smells are almost scarce due to the suppressors, however, it is strange to notice a certain sting in the air, you recognize that smell instantly approaching you.
You close the door of your locker, looking face to face with the young man in front of you "Gary?" you ask surprised that you have been able to identify him even with suppressors, you quickly frown, you intuit that he is not using them. But that's impossible, if he wasn't wearing them a monitor would be chasing him.
You still frown, how strange.
"Hey here's my favorite prep," speaks to you with a sly trickery, with a confidence that is rare at best.
"What do you want? I need to go to my class," You glance at the watch on your wrist, having little patience for whatever absurd games Gary is thinking up.
"Not so fast! I have a brilliant and magnificent idea, believe me, it will be great," he says focusing on you but you don't have to be a genius to know that his ideas are jokes or pranks and would only involve punishments.
You look at him curiously clutching your books "And that idea involves some chaos? I'll pass."
"Don't be such a bore! This place is a complete bore from hell, come on!" he expresses with exaggeration on her face, but you're not in the mood to see it today.
"No, I already told you I have classes, if you'll excuse me, see you" You close your locker but he doesn't let you go that far grabbing your arm, you took it as a warning and that started to annoy you, you hold back from growling at him as that provokes him to continue with his teasing.
" Stay, " he tells you in that voice that should not be used, wanting to bend you to his liking, but you just look at him skeptically, you feel no change in your behavior, his voice is useless with you.
He notices that again his voice doesn't work with you, his charismatic smile falters a little, and neither you nor him say anything to each other, he silently lets you go reluctantly, letting you go to your destination. You shake your head walking away, you have no idea why someone as strange as Gary is interested in you, for an alpha he's a first-class joker, if you didn't know him well enough you might mistake him for a class clown, but no, he's more than that.
He´s dangerous.
But you still let him talk to you, for some reason you find it hilarious and he must notice that as he keeps coming up to you to chat as if you were lifelong friends, his confidence is irritating but also striking.
You enter the classroom without much discomfort and notice that the room smells old, with all those maps placed everywhere, you take a seat in your chair with your name on it, while you hear the voice of Mr. Matthews starting the class, this class you considered a little boring, at least you have your desk neighbor.
"Hey Petey!" you greet your friend, Petey looks up alarmed to hear his name but relaxes when he realizes it's you.
"Oh, hello, good morning," he says wanting to hide his shyness, you smile at him, you like Petey, maybe because he is a cordial omega, it makes him more inoffensive but also nice, the two of you take most of the classes and he is very smart, you don't know why he is not with the nerds yet.
You would like to chat more with Petey but Mr. Matthews' voice interjects "Alright class! Can someone tell me what country this flag belongs to?" he asks pointing to the board, you sigh, this class is going to be a long one.
Only a few minutes had passed when suddenly your head hurt, not those harmless pains that you can bear, but one that will make your whole body ache, so much so that you bend your head towards the table of your desk, what is happening to you? are you dying?
The discomfort appeared in the blink of an eye, you could hear the voice of Mr. Matthews approaching you, you closed your eyes clutching your head with your hands, the pain did not stop, it seemed that you were going to explode at any moment, your skin gets hotter than normal as if you were burning. You don't feel the professor's touch or Petey's touch holding you to take you to the infirmary.
Blinking the only thing you remember before passing out is the fresh smell of the infirmary.
You open your eyes.
You don't know how much time has passed, but it must not be much, because it's still daylight and you still have your uniform on, you feel better having woken up, but it doesn't feel the same, your head is still spinning and spinning, in a confused state, that you want to hit your head with the pillow.
"Until you finally wake up" you see the school nurse, Mrs. McRae with her expressionless face, looking at you with little grace and you grunt closing your eyes against the excessive light of the infirmary.
"What happened, why did I faint?" you ask confused, wanting answers to your discomforts "How long has it been?".
"Don't exaggerate, it's only been half an hour," the nurse informs you looking not so happy to attend to you, she puts on some latex gloves, becoming more conscious you sit on the bed they put you on "Tell me, kid, you are not presented, right?" she interrogates you casually looking through drawers of the school's medicine cabinet.
"No" you shake your head and the nurse lets out a thoughtful hum, does this have to do with your presentation? Is that what your sudden pain was about?
"What a pain, you're old enough for this, but there's no other way," Nurse McRae says to you, and from her pocket she pulls out an envelope and you immediately know what it is.
"I don't think it will work," you said getting anxious about what the nurse had in her hands, it wasn't an injection or a thermometer, it was nothing more or less than a presentation test, one of those that children use.
She ignores you and opens the envelope taking out a wooden tongue depressor without much complexity "Open your mouth" she orders you and you accept knowing that it would have no effect, you open your tongue to insert the new tongue depressor.
This is the test to find out what you are, red for omega, green for beta, and blue for alpha. You feel weird having that thing on your tongue, remembering the days when you went for weekly checkups. You get distracted watching the nurse practically ignoring you checking supplies out of a box.
A few minutes passed before the uninterested nurse told you to take out your tongue depressor, without further ado you do it without much emotion, you already know the result, you have tried a dozen of these presentation tests and they have always failed.
By surprise, the tongue depressor comes out blue , a very distinctive blue, completely staining the part where it was in your mouth. Your hands tremble at the result and your heart tenses, you blink incredulously at the proof you have in your hands, that's not possible, it's... it's... blue, there's no doubt about it.
But that color means...
"Excuse me, this test is no good," you say to the nurse in a hurry but she answers you without much entanglement.
"The test is fine, you don't want to believe you're...?" she turns to look at you but immediately sees the color on the test, she frowns looking somewhat annoyed but not surprised "Uh, so you're that ?".
"No! it's impossible! there are no alpha women!" you almost scream in her face, panicking at the result, it's the first time you get a color, and the nurse laughs, but at you.
"Of course they do, ungrateful girl! They are rarer than male omegas but of course, they exist," she says as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, her gaze changes examining you "Open your mouth again," she orders, and still constipated, you open your mouth showing your teeth "Your canines are starting to grow," she informs you with irritation "And you are starting to smell," the nurse comments.
What? A smell?
She stops examining your teeth, and you take the opportunity to take a piece of your Aquaberry coat to smell it and indeed you smell something , you don't know exactly what it is but you smell... you smell good.
You touch your neck, where your glands are supposed to be, and you don't notice a drastic change, but you still feel your skin warm and your muscles tired, you had dreamed of this moment almost all your life, and now that you know you are you didn't expect it to happen like this.
"I'm a…?" the nurse interrupts you by spraying you without warning, you close your eyes in time, and shriek from the shock of the spray sticking to your skin. "Ow! you could have warned me!" you scream, coughing from the excess, it was a temporary suppressant.
"Too late, now I give you a day, you will be busy for the rest of the day or week, getting used to it takes time," he says writing down some directions with a pen, he tears the sheet from his notepad and hands it to you "Here, now go, I'm going to talk to the principal" without saying anything he opens the door for you to leave.
You say thank you in a low voice still stunned by what just happened, the temporary suppressant took effect and as quickly as your new scent arrived you could not enjoy it as it had been hidden.
When the door to the infirmary opens the first thing you thought was to go straight to a girl's dorm, but no, you need a safer place, maybe you could go home just for this day, but you're not ready to tell your parents what you've become.
You are an alpha, a fucking alpha.
You hear your name being called and you slowly turn around "Hey, are you okay? You collapsed in geography" Petey walks over to you and you take a step back, still shocked by the news.
"Oh, I'm good, the nurse sent me to rest, it's just a common fever," You make up an excuse, and your nose starts to itch again, Petey doesn't seem to notice your nervous state as he continues to talk normally.
"That didn't look like a simple fever," opines the omega crossing his arms.
"I just hadn't had breakfast!" you laugh nervously "Well, I need a decent meal, see you Petey! Thanks for caring..." by pure chance, you sniff air waiting for your nose to relax but you smell Petey's scent covered by suppressants, he's sweet .
"Uh, You're welcome! Do you want me to walk you to the girls' dorm? You might pass out again" he suggests concerned that another time you might have told him how cute he is but right now he just wants to run away from him and his sweet smell.
"No! No need, I'm serious, I'll call a prep to come with me, I'd rather you didn't miss another class," you lie, the last thing you want right now is one of your pack seeing you in this state.
"Um, okay" nods Petey unconvinced "Well, see ya!" he walks away and you sigh finally being able to breathe properly.
God, this was going to be hell.
You ran to Harrington house trying to go as unnoticed as possible, waving to those who spoke to you disguising the small crisis you have, avoiding the looks of the monitors, this of hormones is also something new.
You enter the house, luckily you see that no one is there, everyone must be in class or out, good for you, here with the silence and in the comfort of your pack's meeting point along with the warm temperature that sets the whole house, you think about what had just happened.
You pinch your arms in case it is a lucid dream, but this looks more like a nightmare than a dream, how is it feasible that you are an alpha? Why hadn't they taught you about the existence of alpha women? Had they hidden it from you all this time? You grunt sitting on the nearest couch, you are in an unknown field, you were supposed to be a beta, or an omega, but an alpha?
You are a freak, there is no doubt about that.
That's what you think, what else can you be when you go against the nature of things?
The nurse's words come to your mind, telling you as if it wasn't the most shocking thing, and maybe it isn't, but you've never in your life met a female alpha, alphas are supposed to be men. But the tongue depressor doesn't lie, the blue was unmistakable, and your newly acquired scent also tells you otherwise.
The mixed smells that inhabit the house reassure you, that this is not the end of the world (although it seems so) better to be presented than to be nothing for the rest of your life, besides, if Petey exists why not you?
You take a piece of your Aquaberry coat wanting to smell your newly acquired scent again, but the aerosol suppressant is too effective, there is no trace. You look up at the ceiling to reflect, why did everything change so suddenly? it was never going to be the same when it was discovered what you are.
Your soul tries to sob at the anguish of the future but you repress yourself, crying is useless, what you need now is an answer, answers to all the questions that arise by the second.
You hear the front door open and immediately get up thinking what to do, running away is the best answer but you are so fatigued that even running is a challenge, besides, your body practically begs for comfort from someone in your pack.
Who enters the main room is Bif, you both look at each other and he is surprised to see you so early inside the house, on the other hand, you look at him distressed "Hey, classes are boring?" he asks smiling but you don't answer him avoiding his gaze, he immediately notices your cautious attitude, it was a weird thing to see "What happened? are you all right?" he asks approaching to see you closely, you looked like a sad pup.
You are afraid of your group finding out, how would they look at you knowing what you are? There are not supposed to be two alphas in a group, your new smell would be unpleasant for them? they will also have to get used to what you are now.
You meet Bif's gaze looking for something that might give away that he already knows what you're hiding, but you only see his worried face, as if he's ready to fight a battle if you ask him "Tell me, did someone hurt you?" he mutters sounding angry.
"No, it's not that, Bif...I..." you get stuck when you speak, and you find it hard to express yourself at all, his scent comes out like a breath of fresh air and without much thought you move closer to hug him, feeling the softness of his Aquaberry vest and his scent protruding from his suppressor, he receives your embrace without discomfort, squeezing you with his arms waiting for his scent to reassure you, something you have done with him since you were children, with him you can feel vulnerable.
Already in his arms, the itchiness of your nose disappeared and the pain subsided, his touch had felt like something you needed, his body and yours although they were different complement each other, he began to caress your hair as he knows you like it, you purr in confidence, you needed this.
"It's okay, whatever it is we'll figure it out," he tells you and you let out a distressed sigh, Bif is usually so abrupt with those he doesn't consider his friends, but him holding you feels so warm and loving.
"That's the problem, Bif, there's no solution to this" you comment and separate from him so they can see each other face to face "I just presented..." you confess sounding like a death sentence, Bif's reaction was to smile with wide eyes.
"Really? You're not kidding?" he asks cheerfully hugging you tightly you almost stop breathing for a few seconds "That's wonderful! When did that happen? How did it happen? Are you an omega or a beta?" he asks one question per second, so happy that it crushed you to think that you would ruin his mood with just a few words, the whole herd was eager to know what you would be.
"Neither," you tell him taking a bit of courage, Bif loosens his grip expectantly at what you are going to say, his confused face evident.
"I am an alpha, Bif," you confess touching her arms so that she puts her full attention on your words and can believe you "An alpha, " you repeat this time more sure of your words.
