Chapter Text

Harsh winds blew across the battlefield full of holes and broken root debris. It wailed loudly in Naruto's ears who had his hands clenched in the gravel that cut sharply into his skin.

He won the tug of war against Obito and took back all of the chakra he had of Kurama but it came at an extremely steep cost.

Bile rose up in his mouth at the bodies of his fellow Shinobi, his classmates—his friends!!

If only his abilities had lasted longer! If only he had been able to convince Obito! If only-

Somehow despite not using Kurama’s chakra or being in sage mode he could feel the chakra of some of the shinobi alliance still alive. It wasn't a lot and they were quite faint.

But he could still do this! He may have lost a lot of important people but he could still save the few of them that were left!

Just as he was gathering up resolve and all of the chakra he had left he was suddenly grabbed by the second Hokage who immediately used hiraishin to teleport them to a forest clearing.

Once moved, Naruto shoved at the man's chest and fell to the grass covered ground.

“What are you doing?! Take me back! I can still save people!” Naruto screamed at the man.

Just as he stood up though the Nidaime placed a seal on Naruto's neck that made him spasm as though electrocuted.

“What did you do?” Naruto asked as spots paraded his vision. And as he slumped to the ground he could vaguely make out the words the other said.

“I hope Anija can stall them long enough to do this.”

Then everything went dark.

Coming back into consciousness Naruto blinked away the remaining blur from his eyes.

He came face to face with the Nidaime straddling him with an ink brush in hand. His jacket was unzipped and the mesh armor he wore was rucked up allowing for his chest to be written on.

He tensed his abdominal muscles immediately.

“Don't move. You woke up a lot faster than I expected,” the man said.

To Naruto what the man was writing just looked like gibberish.

“Why? What are you doing?”

The man's eyes quickly flicked up to look at Naruto’s face before looking back down.

“I'm writing a message to my younger self because I'm going to send you back in time,” he said.

“What?! But what about what's going on right now!? We haven’t lost yet!”

Nidaime pulled the brush away from Naruto's squirming body before firmly pushing down on Naruto's torso with his other hand, trying to prevent Naruto’s squirming.

“No. We are losing this war. More than 4/5ths of the army you all started with is dead! This war can now be won by keeping you out of enemy hands! And that is something I am capable of!” Nidaime’s voice rose until he was shouting at Naruto who glared back at him.

Naruto understood that feeling of ‘something only you can do’. He understood it intimately. Too intimately. Which is why he grit his teeth and stopped moving, allowing Nidaime to continue writing his message.

The words he said weren't wrong. Naruto’s heart was breaking just thinking of the people he had lost. Kakashi-sensei, Sakura-chan, Sai, Ino-Shika-Cho, Hinata, Neji, Kiba, Shino, Tenten, Bushy brows, Gaara… Even Sasuke hadn’t been moving.

The power he now wielded hadn't been trained with enough. He couldn't maintain it long enough or utilize it to its full potential. What was even the point of being so strong when the people he cared about didn't make it!!?

“I'm sorry for shouting at you,” the former Hokage said gently, “please forgive my moment of weakness.”

It snapped Naruto out of his spiraling thoughts.

“It's okay, I get it. Would you… would you explain what you're doing?” Naruto blew out a breath and asked, hoping that it would distract him or at least drown out his thoughts.

Nidaime paused his movements briefly before continuing.

“Yes, I can do that. Currently I'm writing a message to my younger self.”

“Why are you writing it on me?”

“There is a possibility that the seal I'm going to use will not transport all of your items with you, so if I send a scroll with you it might disintegrate. You will most likely lose a few kunai and shuriken in the journey.”

“Seriously!? What about me?? Am I going to be okay?” Naruto asked, panicked.

“Yes, you'll be alright,” Nidaime’s facade broke a bit and a tiny smile emerged. “The seal I'm going to use to send you back is what enabled me to create hiraishin in the first place as it is based off of it. I was never able to test it though as it requires an enormous amount of chakra and extremely precise equations.

That is why this message is imperative. You'll come face to face with my younger self and although he will be… rough around the edges he will understand the message I have written.”

“So, you know exactly when and where I'm going to end up?”

“Yes, I'm-,” he paused with a far away look, “I'm sending you to the happiest night of my life.”

The happiest night of his life? That's an interesting day—err night to choose.

“Won't me appearing out of nowhere ruin that night?”

The former Hokage paused again and seemed to really think about it and if the slight furrow of the man's eyebrows was to be believed then Naruto should be concerned.

“No,” he began slowly, “you won't ruin the night.”

“You sure? Why can't you just send me like six months into the past?”

Ignoring the former question Nidaime focused on the latter and continued writing his message.

“I can't send you six months in the past because you will already exist and the possibilities of what would happen should you come into contact with yourself would be catastrophic for the world.”

“What about Kurama? Won't he already exist?”

“Kurama? Oh, you mean Kyuubi. The Bijuu are different. Their existence is primarily made up of chakra and natural energy. What most likely will occur is the Kyuubi of the past and the current one will combine if they get too close to each other.”

“That doesn't sound good. In fact that sounds quite dangerous!”

“It'll be alright. He'll be with you and can help you figure things out.”

Naruto wanted to question who he meant but realized he was most likely talking about the past version of the Nidaime and not Kurama.

Just as Naruto was about to ask more, a huge explosive boom was heard not far in the distance.

It was close enough that when Nidaime looked up he could see smoke rise up over the surrounding trees. He scribbled a couple more words before he read over his message quickly.

“That'll have to do…” he mumbled to himself.

Naruto once again looked over the message scrawled across his torso but couldn’t make out what any of it said.

He has written the message in code. Kurama’s voice spoke up, he sounded very tired.

There you are! Where have you been? And… What do you think about what’s going on? Naruto asked uncertainly.

The chakra I got back needed to settle. I think the blue Senju brat is crazy but what he’s doing will do more than just win the war, it’ll also change history. Kurama at first sounded irritated but then he sounded contemplative by the end.

“The ink is dry,” spoke Nidaime after lightly touching the last bit of the message to ensure it didn’t smudge.

Naruto hadn’t realized how much weight the Nidaime had put on him until the man got off. His thighs felt a bit tingly and cold without the weight and warmth.

He got up and let the mesh armor fall naturally and then zipped his jacket back up.

Nidaime bit into his thumb and started doing hand signs. Naruto recognized the last few as the hand signs for the summoning jutsu.

“Summoning jutsu!” the man said, placing his hand on the ground.

Instead of an animal appearing, like Naruto was expecting, what appeared was a huge scroll. It was taller than he was! It must’ve been at the very least 180cm tall.

Nidaime swiped the thumb he had bitten over the sealed part of the scroll allowing for it to be opened, and then rolled it out covering the clearing they were in from end to end.

Looking over the scroll, Naruto recognized the biggest symbol as the one he had seen Nidaime leave on Obito during their battle with him. Except it was much bigger and the arms of the symbol were much, much longer. He could see that there were lines and lines and lines of symbols. Naruto recognized a lot more of the lines than he expected and it reminded him of when he got a look at the extended seal that had sealed Kurama.

Naruto instantly regretted not learning more about fuinjutsu from Jiraiya. The man had offered in between all of the Kurama seal stuff but Naruto was too stubborn and unruly at the time to learn more than just a little. Just another regret. Like his inability to sav-

“Naruto, I need you to come stand here in the center,” Nidaime said, once again stopping Naruto’s thoughts.

Once he reached where Nidaime wanted him to stand his Dad appeared.

“Sorry for being late, Nidaime-sama,” Minato said.

“It’s alright, give him the chakra while I fill in the coordinates,” Nidaime responded.

Minato turned to Naruto while Nidaime pulled out his ink brush again only this time Naruto could see he pushed chakra into the tip of it before writing on the sealing paper.

“Dad, what's going on and what did he mean by ‘give’ me chakra?”

“I can't explain everything but I can tell you that I’m giving you the portion of Kyuubi’s chakra I have within me. When you go back if you come across Kyuubi he will combine with the chakra you carry and in order to ensure it's an equal battle of wills you need to carry an equal portion of chakra,” Minato explained before putting his fist up.

That made a lot of sense but Naruto had a hard time believing his father was just saying all of this so calmly.

Do it Naruto.

Naruto lifted his fist and bumped it against his fathers.

In the combined realm he watched Kurama romp with his counterpart until they looked like a glowing circle of chakra.

Blinking he came back to the clearing. Minato looked out of breath as he gulped for air.

Kurama’s chakra certainly felt heavier now.

Everything okay, Kurama?

Not now brat, I need to rest for a while. Let’s hope you don't come across the other me for a long time. Kurama said, sounding even more tired than he did earlier.

“Ready?”

As Minato pulled back and stood outside of the paper next to Nidaime did it start to finally hit Naruto that this was happening. He was going to be sent back in time.

“Wait! Uh, um, is there anything I shouldn’t do? Or should know? I’m going to be changing history aren’t I?!” Naruto stammered, freaked out.

“Going back in time is already going to change events so there is no need to panic about changing things however,” Nidaime looked away and swallowed and then apparently having come to a decision met Naruto’s eyes with determination. “I made mistakes, I allowed my prejudice of the Uchiha to blind me, so I ask of you to not tell him about the part that the Uchiha have played in this war.” Nidaime bowed his head low to Naruto. It felt weird to be bowed to especially by a previous Hokage, but he could feel the desperation of the request being asked of him.

“I can do that,” Naruto replied.

“All I ask of you, Naruto is to sleep well, eat well, find happiness, and please help me meet Kushina again.” Minato smiled brightly at Naruto.

That is when tears started to fill Naruto’s eyes.

“Of course Dad! I love you and Mom and I'll never forget you both!” Naruto desperately yelled out with a grin that didn’t match how he felt.

Chakra lit up on all ten fingers of both Nidaime and Minato and then they pressed their hands to the seal. It started to glow.

“Kushina and I love you too, Naruto.”

Naruto only got a few seconds to watch as both Nidaime and Minato started to glow a bright white hue, and hear an even bigger explosion blow up very close to the clearing.

His father’s smiling face and Nidaime's determined expression were the last things Naruto saw.

𖦹

Sliding the door closed with a soft audible thud, leaving the loud laughter and conversation behind, Tobirama let out a breath.

It had been a rough week for everyone in the compound, but now Tobirama was free to finally go back to his study.

No more paperwork, no more giving orders, no more listening to a long winded excuse about why the mission hadn’t been fulfilled completely. And no more loud people.

The hallway creaked under his feet as he did nothing to avoid the squeaky spots, his steps speeding up.

Coming to his study, a rush of exhilaration at all that awaited him coursed through him.

His heart sped up.

Lifting his hand to open the door, he stilled when he heard a thud. Carefully listening and trying to sense anything out of the ordinary he waited for a moment. Once raucous laughter reached his ears, and finding everyone’s chakra where it should be, did he relax.

Someone must have done something stupid back in the banquet hall.

The smell of dried ink and papers greeted him upon opening the door. Everything looked like it was exactly where he left it a week ago. Shelves filled to the ceiling with scrolls. Ink brushes scattered upon the chabudai right next to the last seal he had been working on. Papers and half done seals littered the floor, and the single window still closed and locked with a seal.

Any leftover tension bled out from his shoulders. It was nice to be back somewhere that made sense.

Stepping around the scattered papers on the floor, he gingerly walked around to light the candles, bathing the room in orange light, and then made his way to his zabuton to sit down.

Once comfortably seated he carefully looked over the seal he had been working on previously. It had been the start of a simple paralysis seal. The idea must have been to make it stronger so it could work on an area without the use of needing more to create the area of effect. Tapping on the table he couldn’t quite remember what his thought process had been.

All the time away had sprung forth more ideas, and what he had been working on before fell to the wayside.

Instead of forcing it he turned and grabbed some fresh paper. Placing them on the table he grabbed his previous work and set it on the ground next to his other work in progress seals. Sometimes having them next to each other scattered around his room like he did helped him jump to conclusions that he wouldn’t have otherwise thought of.

No, he did not need to clean them up no matter what anybody in his family kept saying. Keep your opinion to yourself.

Now, set up, he could work. During his time away he thought up a way to make paper bombs even stronger and he just needed to get all of the possible combos out of his head. Picking up his self inking brush he brought it close to the paper.

Then a huge spike in chakra appeared. And it appeared right… above him?! Quickly dropping the ink brush he looked above and instead of seeing the ceiling a person in orange dropped on him.

A loud crash and thud deafened him for a second as his head hit the floor, hard. Was he being attacked?! The person was much heavier than he expected.

“Thanks for cushioning my fall!” The unknown person had the gall to say.

“Get off, you intruder!” Tobirama yelled at the trespasser, as he moved his hand to the underside of his table. He always kept a kunai stashed there just in case for moments like this.

Grabbing it he went for a stab. Only to be stopped.

“Shit! He did say you would be rough around the edges… Fuck, uh, just give me a second,” the intruder said holding both of his wrists and preventing him from stabbing or punching him. The man sat on his pelvis but that didn’t limit everything.

Not waiting for the intruder to speak more or make the next attack he moved his head to headbutt the trespasser and also readied his knee to hit the man's back at the same time.

One, two, and go! Headbutting and kneeing at the same time got the man to let go of his wrists.

Now! He could go for the stab again!

But instead of getting to stab, the man hit the kunai out of his hand. “Please just listen to me! I’m not an enemy!”

“Liar! How did you even get in here?!” Tobirama asked, thrashing as his wrists were caught again.

The intruder suddenly pushed Tobirama’s hands under his knees and sat on them. Tobirama could only try kneeing him in the back more and stare at his face.

A face he finally took a moment to look at. He had blond hair, blue eyes, and peculiar mirrored scars on his cheeks.

“I should have left this undone… why didn’t I?” The blond questioned himself, as he began to… undress himself??

“What are you doing?!” Tobirama asked, a heat rising to his cheeks and ears.

Was this person a bloodline thief? The compromising position definitely did nothing to dissuade the possibility.

With the interesting orange garment thrown off, a sturdy looking mesh armor remained and Tobirama stilled and felt himself stir as he watched the blond’s hands move to remove it.

However all previous thoughts disappeared, and his academic interest was suddenly piqued when he saw a familiar script mark the man’s torso.

With Tobirama no longer thrashing and trying to attack, the intruder lifted his knees enough to let Tobirama have his hands back.

Tobirama brought up a hand and caressed the ink gently. It had only dried recently. Lending truth to the words before him.

The message he read is as follows:

Sgjt jt Vyvnblj Mbqvsp. J fmsqvts gjt xfkkafjmh sp zpv bmc kfbuf gjn jm zpvq dbqf bt js jt sgf pmkz xbz sp xjm sgjt xbq. The code was something Tobirama had made up one afternoon for fun after learning other ciphers. He hadn’t taught it to anyone, not even his older brother. The handwriting looked like his own too, even the part at the end where whoever clearly had to write in a rush.

Not to mention the message had things only he would know and think.

“Do you believe me now?” The blond intruder who he now knows is named Uzumaki Naruto asked.

“Perhaps, Uzumaki Naruto, where have you come from?”

Tobirama watched the time traveler, because it was obvious that is what he is, move a hand to his chin and think. While he struggled to figure out the words to say Tobirama analyzed him. He didn’t look like an Uzumaki in the slightest, except maybe if Tobirama saw his face in better light he could see a resemblance in his face shape. Also now that he was relaxing and feeling the time traveler’s chakra with more clarity he felt like a Uzumaki. The density and sheer size of it was monstrous.

“I am from the future!” Naruto said, grinning, and it was there that the resemblance to the Uzumaki was most obvious.

“I gathered that much. How far in the future are you from?” Tobirama scoffed. This guy might be an idiot.

“Hmm let me think… Jiji was how old when he died… and you’re older than that so…” Naruto started to trail off and mumble to himself.

While he did that Tobirama tuned him out and grabbed the mesh armor shirt Naruto had tossed to the side.

At first glance it looked pretty sturdy. It would be able to stop kunai, shuriken, and most blades like a tanto. Trying his best to pull it apart, Tobirama concluded it would probably be able to stop most slashes from a long blade as well, however there was a major flaw with the edges of it. He came to the conclusion it must be mass produced as it seemed it hadn’t been tailored to Naruto specifically. That could luckily be fixed.

Once done with his inspection he looked back up at Naruto. How long was he going to sit on him anyway?

“Okay! I think I must be from somewhere between seventy and ninety years in the future,” Naruto said.

It was a large range of time and quite far off. How did the future version of himself write that message? It had knowledge only he would know after all and yet it was impossible for him to still be alive if Naruto really was from that far into the future.

Suddenly there was a knock at his door.

“Tobi? Everything okay in there? I heard crashing sounds, I swear if another one of your experiments exploded I’m not helping you clean it up this time,” the exasperated voice of Touka could be heard muffled on the other side.

“Shit, get off me,” Tobirama whisper yelled at Naruto.

Quickly standing up he shed his haori and threw it at Naruto. “Hurry put that on, hide this, and don’t say anything,” he said to Naruto as he also handed Naruto the orange garment.

‘Tobi, you’re not answering! Are you okay?” And now she was starting to sound worried.

Racing to the door Tobirama opened it just as she was reaching for a weapon with a hand extended to open the door.

“Touka, I’m fine,” he said.

She looked at him with a scrutinizing up and down look and then her visible eye darted to look behind him.

“Oh, I see what’s going on here now,” she said, a smirk making its way to her face. Leering at Tobirama she relaxed and leaned against the door frame. “This explains why you always blow off Hashi’s attempts at finding you a partner.”

Before Tobirama could question what the hell she was talking about he peeked behind himself and noticed Naruto had put on the haori and hidden the garment from the future like he asked, but the mesh armor had been left out in the open. On top of Tobirama’s messed up clothes from the previous scuffle. It’s obvious what conclusion she had come to.

He needed to think quickly. What could he possibly say? They still haven’t finished their conversation and Tobirama needed to verify things still.

“It’s not what you think, but please don’t tell anyone,” Tobirama began before tacking on; “I’m planning to talk to Anija about this.”

“Oh, I’m pretty sure I have come to the correct conclusion but sure I won’t tell anyone. I’ll keep your secret,” a mischievous glint entered her eye, “for a price,” she concluded.

Gritting his teeth he asked, “what do you want?”

“Don’t sound so upset, I’m not the one sneaking people in,” she said. Tobirama wanted to argue with her about that but it unfortunately was not the time or place. “I want you to take over my chores for hmm one week! No! Two weeks!”

She could’ve asked for worse so Tobirama would just have to take it. “Fine, I’ll do your chores for two weeks, unless a mission comes up, now will you please leave m—us alone?”

“Sure, sure, I’ll leave you two alone,” she snickered, “don’t play too roughly, these walls aren’t that thick after all, and remember to mark places where not everyone can see them.”

“Touka!”

“Alright! I’m leaving! Bye whatever your name is, maybe next time Tobi will introduce us!” Touka waved at Naruto as she left.

Her laughter could be heard even after the door had been slid closed.

Turning around and leaning on it, Tobirama glared at Naruto. While it wasn’t really his fault it also kind of was. If it wasn’t for him, he wouldn’t be in this situation.

“She seemed fun,” Naruto said, breaking the tension.

“In seventy to ninety years I am most certainly dead. Who wrote the message?” Ignoring Naruto’s previous words, Tobirama got right to work asking questions.

“You did. Or rather future you who had been brought back to life did,” Naruto explained.

Thinking over what he just heard, Tobirama walked over to a dresser and took out some blank sealing paper.

Picking up his ink brush again he began to create a noise canceling seal. Touka made a good point about sound and it would be better if no one could hear their conversation.

Placing it on the wall he pushed chakra into it.

Turning around he crossed his arms and looked at Naruto. “Bringing people back to life is impossible.” Tobirama would know he already tried to figure out a seal that could do that.

“It’s possible,” Naruto said with conviction.

“And if I don’t believe you?”

Naruto pointed to his chest with his thumb. “Do you doubt this message then?”

Tobirama wavered. He couldn’t see himself teaching anyone else that code because of how easy it is to decode, and he could see the logic of giving notes on his abilities rather than information about a war seventy to ninety years in the future. But then…

“Why did he send you to this time period, to this night in particular?” Tobirama asked.

“I have no idea about why this time period but he said this was the happiest night of your life,” he replied.

Happiest? Oh.

“That day was seven days ago but I can see why he would decide on tonight.”

“What happened seven days ago?”

A small smile broke through, and against his better judgment he answered the question. “Seven days ago my nephew was born and I became an uncle.”

“Congratulations!” Naruto exclaimed, grinning wide again, with no animosity or a single lie. He meant his words completely.

This Uzumaki Naruto was really, very simple. If he said congratulations or that a version of Tobirama had been brought back to life and sent him back in time then he meant it. Or at least believed it wholeheartedly.

If it wasn’t for the message Tobirama would believe this was some kind of trap and Naruto was under a powerful genjutsu, or broken and brainwashed.

Snapping out his thoughts to focus on Naruto, he noticed the grin had dropped to form a frown and Naruto’s eyes looked glazed over. It was a familiar look, one of those whom had managed to come back after a frightful mission.

The message did say something about a war.

“Naruto-san, how were you sent back in time?”

Snapping out of it Naruto met Tobirama’s eyes again. “Uh, it was a ginormous seal. Other you said that you based hiraishin off of it I think.”

Tobirama walked over to a sealed chest, opened it, and pulled out a scroll. Undoing it he held it up for Naruto to look at. “Did it look like this?”

“Yeah! It did! Though it was a lot bigger, and,” Naruto hummed in thought, “it had more to it. Like more lines of symbols.”

Interesting. This time and space seal he made was primarily theoretical. It came to him after he tried to figure out how to bring people back to life. Could never get it to work though until he took away the time variable resulting in a convenient teleportation seal.

“I must have come back to this seal, as it’s currently incomplete,” Tobirama mumbled to himself while he turned the scroll to look over it again.

Inside he started to feel elated. His theoretical seal worked! Time travel was possible! And so was bringing people back to life but arguably the time travel was more impressive.

Turning back to Naruto to ask more questions he was met with Naruto laying down using the zabuton as a pillow.

Was he seriously asleep? Right now? But he wasn’t done asking questions.

“Oi, Naruto-san! I’m not done asking you questions!”

In response all he got was Naruto rolling over and letting out a snore.

Feeling his eye twitch, Tobirama stomped over and yanked Naruto’s shoulder so the time traveler was on his back.

The message caught his eye. Since it was hard to doubt it he couldn’t help but let out a long frustrated sigh. Maybe he deserved the rest. The orange garment definitely had seen better days. One of the sleeves was ripped up and Naruto really needed a bath. He was covered in grime and dirt.

Future him was a prick. This whole thing was going to be a logistical nightmare. He would have to somehow convince Anija that Naruto really was from the future or think of some kind of excuse for why he needed to stay at the compound.

Naruto had nowhere to go or stay. He had lost everything.

Thinking of that, Tobirama couldn’t figure out why Naruto had been sent to this time period. Why not send him to a time closer to his own period? There was something about that that was suspicious.

He was not the kind of man to do something for no reason.

He would figure out what future him was thinking.

Putting his fingers together he said, “kage bunshin no jutsu,” and then sent his clone to go get a blanket and another zabuton.

Carefully taking off the fascinating sandals off of Naruto’s feet he set them aside, and placed the mesh armor, as well as, the orange garment on top of them. While Naruto could use the mesh armor again they would have to figure out what to do with the more futuristic parts of Naruto’s clothes. They’d probably have to place them into a sealed chest for the time being.

Tobirama’s clone returned and then popped out of existence. The clone luckily didn’t run into anyone while grabbing the stuff.

After placing the blanket over Naruto, Tobirama traced a finger over the hitai-ate on his forehead. Slipping his thumb underneath it he slid it off of the time traveler's forehead.

The long cloth seemed impractical as someone could grab it during battle. The symbol was interesting. Reminded him of the Uzumaki symbol but also of his brother as it was fashioned to look like a leaf.

A passage from the message flashed through his mind.

Placing the zabuton in a way to where he could see the message that was written on Naruto’s chest clearly, Tobirama grabbed a blank paper and began writing notes on everything he experienced from the moment Naruto appeared. He copied down the message word for word, and drew sketches of all of the futuristic clothing, the sandals, and the hitai-ate.

He would understand why Naruto had been sent to him.

Notes:

This chapter would just not fucking end. I tried multiple times but Tobirama kept saying: "nope! not done yet!" So please don't expect this length of a chapter every time.

Tobirama's note to himself is translatable and I thought about keeping it a mystery but have decided against that. I can't take credit for it as its Beaverscratch from a horror game called Shipwrecked 64. I'm pretty sure there's a translator somewhere on the internet. But if you want a hint on how to figure it out: Mbqvsp translates to Naruto. Also its not necessary to translate the message as it doesn't pertain to anything plot relevant.

Thank you so very much for reading!!
