Summary
In the aftermath of Baelor's death, the Targaryen family splinters. All Maekar wants is to hold the remnants of his family close, but even he knows that Aerion cannot stay here, not with Baelor's ghost still wandering the halls.
Dunk has had enough of princes for a lifetime, but Baelor's memory will not let him turn away from the wreckage before him. When Maekar begs him to take Aegon on as his squire, he accepts, and when Maekar begs him to look after Aerion, Dunk cannot turn him away. He is determined to fulfill his duty as Baelor's man, and to do it well, Aerion be damned.
Aerion's life crumbles down around his shoulders in the span of a single afternoon. The Maesters say his leg may never fully heal, his own father cannot look him in the eye, and his family wishes he had died in his uncle's stead. When he finds himself exiled to Lys with only the brother who hates him and the knight who maimed him for company, he is certain he's being sent off to die.
Fortunately, the gods have other plans.

wanted to plant a seed here that indulging his darker instincts is harmful for Aegon. He's succeeded in scaring Aerion here, but he's also scaring himself, even if he doesn't quite realize it.Yes I wanted Aegon to be wrong sometimes because I think that tracks with reminding you that he's a child. His thinking is a little shallower, a little more black and white, than reality. So he doesn't get that Aerion realized first, and he doesn't get that Aerion's first instinct was to apologize to his dad.

You know what though? I can think of several events in Targaryen history where a lot of things probably would have gone a lot less bloody if the maesters were more liberal with the sedatives. -

Excellent politicking, worldbuilding and characterisation, must read for masculine, mad Aerion trying to find his way in a world who is opposing him at every turn
