Summary
The maesters’ records speak of a fever. Daeron Targaryen remembers the teeth, the blood, and the milky-white eyes.
When a literal blight hijacks the Seven Kingdoms’ deadliest plague, the realm’s most “disappointing” prince and his brutally tactical father must survive the calamity crashing down on their home.
Forget the White Walkers, they’re centuries away.
The current problem is a clusterfuck of immediate horrors: a dead blacksmith just bit a raven, all taverns and alehouses have been shut down, and the Prince of Dorne has officially noped out by locking the mountain passes.Let the Great Spring Sickness begin!

Work Summary:
Daeron had always considered himself a man of good instincts.
The dream had been very specific about the ravens.Yet. It happened anyway.
One moment the bird was airborne, the carefully written scroll strapped to its leg, bound for Summerhall and his liege father's hands.
The next— a grey hand, a wet sound, feathers drifting down like it was something peaceful.
The blacksmith did not look up. Mouth bloodied and feathered. He shambled forward as though nothing of consequence had occurred.
The ravens perched on the washing line above had gone very still.
He looked at the birds. They looked at him. Then they looked down at the blacksmith.
Then slowly turned back to him with the specific judgment of birds that had watched a man make a very bad decision and were waiting to see what came next."Fuck. I know. I know," Daeron said, his throat tight.
He had three more scrolls. He put them all away. Each one bearing the same message in his own hand: Father, the dead are coughing and biting. Don't open the gates.

Alternating Maekar and Daeron pov
The Spring Sickness is a zombie plague: people get a wet cough and high fever. Their brain swells and they die, but the body keeps shambling around insensate for a week or two until dying completely. After they become insensate, their saliva becomes extremely infectious and they go around biting people and spreading the disease. Some few people are seemingly also infected, but their fever breaks and they recover. It’s unknown yet if they had the same sickness and had an immunity or if they just overcame a normal malady.
Maekar has been grimly managing the situation as much as he can, trying to limit the exposure of people living in Summerhall, but there’s a lot going on in the wider world he can’t control. Daeron has been having visions of undead rats eating each other and multiplying, and trying to sooth himself by his normal drinking habits, but yet grasping the severity of the situation. Maekar tells the remaining servants to monitor Daeron, but doesn’t have time to coddle him himself.
Daeron sneaks out of Summerhall to visit Summertown and get the scoop from the maester there, but encounters a large procession of people headed north on the main road. They say Dorne (in the south) has closed its borders to everyone and is turning people away by force if necessary. All these people, many of them possibly infected, will be going to or through Summertown, and they likely won’t be the last group.
