Chapter Text

Varian is wearing colorful, expensive clothes. He just got off work and walked home through the park, watching the snowfall. He’s gonna practice with the new song with his band tonight.

He’s the youngest one in the circus, being only seventeen. He always liked the circus's colorful nature, because his parents would always take him there. They always had the best seats and the best tickets, all because they liked showing off.

Varian didn’t really care for the fancy things most of the time unless he needed stuff for his hobbies. Because he hates it unless he needs it. Since he’s into every creative thing there is. That could be painting, writing, anything and everything creative was on the table when it came to Varian's hobbies.

He needed to have everything colorful; he couldn’t be dull. Although his dad made a rule that he had to wear khakis since he’s gonna be a businessman one day, like that is ever gonna happen. He got around that rule by wearing baggy cargo khakis.

The park was charming with the light snow on the ground. Glad that he brought his jacket since it got cold quickly. His bandmates were gonna show up later this evening for practice. He was the only one that has the room, like an entire room for it, since it’s soundproof. Then tomorrow is another day at the circus.

He has been a part of the circus for six months since school got out. He needed to get out of the house. His parents want him to join the family business. They barely let him be able to create a band with his friends. He claimed that it helps get his name out there. They just said don’t do anything stupid that sticks to our family name.

Sure, it wasn’t summer anymore, but he got used to working at the circus. Strangely, people still go in the fall, and the tickets are less due to the cold. The circus is called ‘Circus Olympia’. The funnest part was that the stage names were after Greek myths.

There is Circe, she’s really nice, and she’s an illusionist. She’s kinda motherly and cares a lot about him. Outside of shows, she’s just motherly Maci.

Then there’s Hermes, who is the second youngest, and yet he is the one who misbehaves the most. His role is an acrobat. He's honestly really flexible, which you would never expect when looking at him. Not saying that he looks at him or anything. Anyways his normal name is Jacob. Like the annoying guy, Jacob.

Then there is Dionysus, he’s kinda like the ringmaster. He loves to build up the acts, when he does shows. Half the time, the guy is drowning in paperwork and the technical side of things. So seeing Darren is more common.

Then he is the clown. The funniest part, which he will never tell his parents or anyone outside the circus, is that his stage name is Thalia. It was a fun inside joke, mostly. Darren gave it to him because of how they met and the fact that he acted like a complete fool in front of him. Thalia is the muse of comedy after all. Wait, what is a muse?

Luckily, he got home. After he shook off the snow that was on him, he was allowed to go inside. The house is big yet empty. It’s always empty.

He just wanted to get a hot shower and sleep. But his bandmates were coming over in an hour, so he decided against it. He grabbed an apple and headed down to his room.

The basement was like a mini apartment for him. There was the music room, a mini kitchen with a fridge, microwave, and a capsule coffee machine (it gets used for hot cocoa more than coffee). Then there was his bedroom that took up half the basement.

His bedroom had a bed and two desks (too many projects for just one). Then the bathroom with a counter sink, toilet, and a nice shower that could fit three people (that was a fun test they did, don’t ask). Then the best part is the big ass closet. It was about the size of a half bathroom; it had all his clothes and some of his mother’s nicer dresses (she has so many dresses).

He went and put on a sweater that had different colored sleeves, one side was pink, and the other was blue. Then, of course, since his dad wasn’t home, he put on black baggy sweatpants.

Right at seven, the door opened upstairs, and two people came tumbling down the stairs, fighting for the hundredth time this week.

These idiots were Alex and Clay. Alex is the singer in the band, and Clay plays the drums. They fight all the time until it comes to creating the music. Alex writes the lyrics while Clay writes the actual music notes. I can never understand how they can work together when they can never stay on task with other things.

“Guys, calm down…” Varian started, then died out when neither of them was paying attention. “Do you have snacks?!” Clay asked excitedly. Clay always wanted the ‘Good’ snacks while at Varian’s house.

Clay reminded that ‘Varian’s parents are rich, they can buy the brand name candy.’ Varian just chuckled, “Yeah, I got them,” He pointed to the fridge. “Go raid ‘em.” Clay just grinned and ran.

Alex sighed at Clay being an idiot, like he wasn’t an idiot too, and drank half his water bottle. Varian doesn’t understand how Alex can drink so much water per day.

“Varian, did you practice at all this week?” Alex prodded, knowing that Varian had been too busy to practice because of the circus.

Varian winced, “Not as much as I wanted, but I at least played for a day.” He tried to get around Alex’s discontented tone.

Luckily, Clay came back, eating some of the expensive chocolate pudding cups. It was a crumb base with chocolate, then flakes on top. Clay could eat five of them if neither of them don’t stop him. “Are we gonna start?” Clay shouted animatedly. He was like a puppy now since he got a treat.

“Yes,” Alex rolled his eyes. “Come on, let's start.” Then he pointed at Varian, “You'd better keep up.” Alex managed to wrangle Clay into the room and to get him to leave the snacks. Varian just followed behind the two.

They each went to their spots. Clay hopped onto his stool and tapped the sticks on the drums while Alex was fixing the mic stand. Varian was tuning his guitar.

Practice went well, considering no mistakes were made. Alex’s voice was clear, and he didn’t mess up any words. Clay, well, he goes into his own little world while playing. Varian somehow kept up with the pace of the songs and didn’t mess up any notes.

Alex called it a night when it was around ten. They all had school tomorrow anyway. Clay grabbed a pack of gummies and hid it in his hoodie pocket. Varian mumbled, “Gremlin.” But neither of the two noticed his playful remark.

Varian sent the two away, knowing that if he didn’t, he wouldn’t get enough sleep for school or work. When they finally left, Varian hurriedly went around and tidied things up, then got a long, hot shower that he had been wanting for the past three hours.

He got into bed, and right away his eyes closed. Upstairs, the garage door opened and shut. Three sets of footsteps followed, along with loud arguing. Varian was already asleep.
