Then he leaves his phone and watch behind, slips out to a party Matthew explicitly forbade, and lets the truth sit between them for weeks.
Obviously, Matthew finds out and is less than pleased.

The two men exchanged a look like those I'd seen pass between Matthew and Marcus, and Gallowglass and Fernando. It was the look that soldiers give one another, a recognition that they were brothers-in-arms no matter which side they fought on, who shared a common code of honor.
