Summary
He stood on the vacant lot. The grass smelled of dampness and iron, the sky was azure, as always — that very firmament he had seen a hundred times before. But the boy was not by the wall. He sat in the center of the field, on the ground. Small, thin, with disheveled light hair falling over his face. He wrapped his arms around his knees and stared ahead with an empty gaze. Sae stepped closer. The boy looked up. There was no smile on his face.
"You're leaving again?" the boy asked. His voice was quiet, almost soundless.
He reached out and touched Sae's wrist. His fingers were cold. Sae felt them on his skin, felt them tighten, as if the boy was trying to hold him back. And then he let go. And vanished.
Sae woke up.
