Though the kings and queens that ruled would pass, their legacy survived in us, the last tenant of their touch. Their presence was featherlight on us yet bore down without pause. It was soft and kind, a guiding voice that told us what to do.

    Whatever instruction we were given, we performed without hesitance or complaint. We didn’t have a will of our own, so completing tasks was our primary function. In that cess of our minds, the King's voice would rumble through us, giving us instruction. Whatever he said we would do, for his will was the most important thing in the world to us.

    Serving our King was our sole purpose, and we would never stray from that path.

    Godhood is not granted without sacrifice. The clones care as best they can.

    The spirit frowned and stood up. “That’s weird, we were just together.”

    There was a shift and Uncle’s head came up. They stared at this strange spirit. It turned its back to them and Zuko was breathless at the show of disregard. Figures a spirit would not consider him a threat. He shouldn’t take it personally, but he’s been dismissed his whole life. He’s tired of it. A hand gripped his trembling one and he takes a breath. There is no use getting upset over the ways of a spirit. They both studied its small form and Zuko was caught by its profile. The spirit’s back held three repeating and somewhat glowing symbols. It curved in a familiar motion.

    “A turtle,” Uncle whispered.

    He was borrowing it. He was borrowing the Sword of Legend, and… what, checking in to see if it was needed? Waiting for a hero to come for it?

    It wasn’t sure what to think. It wasn’t supposed to think about its wielders. But it found itself looking forward to the stories, keeping an eye out while the boy slept, memorizing as much of the information he gave it as it could.

    Its job was to protect the innocent, after all.

One of them had snapped off against the frost on Scott’s skin. He hadn’t drawn blood.

    “What the hell,” Scott said faintly. Jimmy’s lips were blue. Frost was creeping across his mouth where he’d bitten Scott, but instead of panicking and demanding assistance, he was just standing there glaring, hugging himself with his bound arms. 

    Scott rolled his eyes and yanked the magic back, making sure to keep a solid grip on it. Jimmy faltered as the frost vanished and spat, “What, planning to draw it out?”

    Shuffling in the opposite cell. “Can you do me a favor?” a second voice asked. “The next time you threaten guards, can you try to have a weapon first to strike fear into their hearts? I think you broke our hand.”

    “We have another,” the man said defensively, and Scar huffed a laugh. “And anyway– oh. There’s someone else in here with me.”

    The Justice League is growing increasingly concerned by their enigmatic friend Captain Marvel and the apparent custody battle he is now embroiled in with his nemisis. Superman and Batman take it upon themselves to investigate, and help if they can. Superman because he's always had a soft spot for the Champion of Magic, and Batman because there has never been a case involving a kid that he hasn't taken very personally.
    Billy Batson has been independent for years now, and he's not about to let anyone tell him what to do.
