During the Race to the Edge series during the war with Viggo and Ryker Stoick comes to the Edge and starts a heated argument with Hiccup about how Hiccup is handling the war and Hiccup and Stoick never had a good relationship and Stoick is treating Hiccup like he's worth nothing and the rest of the riders (Astrid, Snotlout, Fishlegs, Tuffnut and Ruffnut) are listening to this fight from outside the clubhouse and Snotlout Hiccup's older cousin realizes that Hiccup needs someone better to talk to and during the fight Viggo and Ryker attack the Edge and Stoick locks Hiccup in his hut so Hiccup learns "discipline" and Stoick doesn't let Hiccup fight and Viggo notices that Hiccup isn't fighting.

He couldn’t fight dragons, he couldn’t even fight off other kids his age. So when he shot down that dragon he had hoped that maybe he could do something right. Something to make his dad proud. The village proud. But, as always there was a hiccup in his plan. That hiccup just so happens to be a 26 foot long, 2,000 pound, Night Fury. No matter how hard he willed his hand to slice the dragon he just couldn’t. Not when his eyes had shown more understanding than his entire village. Now, Hiccup has a reason to leave Berk. A reason to make new someplace safer for him and toothless both. They deal with the Red Death quickly, using Gobbers forge to melt together a halfway decent leg, and finally finding a home with a new, safe, nest. He just didn’t expect to catch the attention of some dragon hunters who seem dead set on adopting him into their tribe. Hiccup just wants his family safe.
