He held an empty bottle in his hand that he should put down. The radio was playing the same silly show Hongo usually had running in his office. The volume was set so low, Shanks strained to hear it, but sound echoed in the hollow halls of the Holy Land.
He remembered the password, only because it was the same drink he’s downing now. The line rang, he read the name off the bottle, and then he was live. Live. On Air. His crew might hear him now, wherever they were.
“I’m…uh…” He was nervous. Or drunk. Or both. “One of my crewmates, he listens to you a lot.”
“Oh, a sailor?”
“He’s a doctor, but I’m…I’m his Captain.”
“And you’re calling in for him? Is it his birthday?”
“No, I’m—” He needed to hang up. “—away right now, so I wanted…all of them…to know I was thinking of them and listening to this…to you, I mean.”
“A bridge is human ingenuity at its finest. Someone somewhere thought to make permeant the act of reaching out a hand. I’d be happy to be that bridge for you and your boys, Captain. We’ve got a few minutes left, so I’ll give you the floor.”
