Summary
“A life for a life,” Shang tells her after the avalanche.
He spares Mulan’s life. The army leaves her behind anyway.
Half-dead in the mountains and burning with fever, Mulan is found not by Chinese soldiers, but by Shan Yu and the remnants of the Hun army she failed to kill. Forced into survival among the enemy under a false name, Mulan slowly becomes something unrecognizable even to herself: soldier, exile, weapon, spouse, traitor, survivor.
Caught between the country that rejected her and the people she was taught to hate, Mulan must decide who she is when neither womanhood nor manhood fit cleanly anymore, and whether being seen is worth the price of never being able to go home again.
