What if Ned was actually a good father and tried to help his children.
Look at the end of the day, Ned was a pretty crap father. He didn’t teach his children the politics of the real world, didn’t seem to teach them much at all, let his wife show Jon hatred, wouldn’t tell Jon his mother’s name, didn’t let Jon have any path in life except the NW which is a PRISON SENTENCE, left Winterfell while his son was in a coma after a life threatening fall, didn’t teach his heir to keep his promises, killed his daughters wolf while both of them were innocent and other things.
But what if he was a good father? Starting a year before the show starts but with Robb and Jon finishing the dire wolves earlier, Ned decides to be a parent. Oh and Jon is Neds bastard here.

Seven years ago, nine year old Jon Snow disappeared in the Winterfell woods, along with his direwolf cub Ghost. A bloody tuft of white fur was the only thing found. Eddard Stark searched everywhere, sent out countless men and missives, looking for any sign of his son. Eventually, he was forced to give up. Accept that his son was dead, and go into mourning. And mourn he did. For 3 weeks, the Lord of Winterfell barely ate or drank. And in the rare moments that he did sleep, he was awoken by horrid night terrors of any and every bad thing that could have possibly happened to his boy. After regaining his wits, he told his lady wife the truth about the boy. The woman wanted to scream at him, cry, ask why he never told her, but she couldn't. This man just lost a son. And she had no-one to blame for her feelings but herself.
But now, Jon Snow has arrived at Winterfell, wealthy beyond all measure, and with one goal in mind. Win the Game, and live in peace. But this is Westeros, and he is playing the Game of Thrones. There will be no peace.

There was no explanation for how this came to be. From different places across the world people were taken from their lives to be locked in Winterfell's Great Hall with an unspecified way to escape to freedom. All they had to go off of were eleven journals carrying detailed accounts of many of those within the hall and others not present.
The real question that needed to be asked was whether this group could survive trapped together until they had finished the journals or if they would kill each other before the first was done with.
