Summary
Set after the Battle of Camlann, Arthur is sure his only venture next is spending the rest of his days finally figuring out the mystery that is Merlin. It’s been two years since Merlin’s magic was revealed and Arthur was finally starting to not only tolerate magic in his kingdom but come to accept the fact it had always been there and will always be. But his progress is shaken, however, when he and Merlin are suddenly expected to navigate their way through a new, and perhaps the most challenging, undertaking yet….
Fatherhood.
Basically Arthur and Merlin become parents, a bit unwillingly, through magic and prophecy. But their unwillingness is short lived as becoming fathers forces them to address their own feelings for each other and what it all means for the future of Albion.

Arthur watched, unable to fully comprehend the events that had seemingly just crashed and burned in front of him rather than calmly unfold. He turned to look at the other knights who only shrugged as Mordred sank lower into his seat, lips pressed into a pout as he picked at his food.
“I…” He started and paused, taking a moment to gather his thoughts “Why do you want Merlin to like you so badly?” He finally sighed. Mordred stopped playing with his food, glancing up before looking at the door the servant in question had exited through
“Because he’s Merlin.” He said as if that provided any sort of answer.
Arthur didn’t deserve this. He did his best to be a good person. Maybe this was some kind of divine intervention saying he needed to up his charity game. He needed to give the lower town a bigger tax break or something. Perhaps ride out and save three more damsels than usual.
"He has a point," Gwaine piped up as he inhaled another mead "He is Merlin."

Arthur stood frozen in the corridor of cells. He refused to turn around back to that room of death. He wouldn’t look or even go near the poor forgotten bodies until one man was in his presence alive and well. Because he had to be, he couldn’t be in that mess of burnt flesh and blood. Merlin couldn’t have been captured or held here. It wasn’t true, he didn’t, none of those bodies could be him. But he knew that scrap of fabric. He had given that neckerchief to him himself, it was a birthday present.

"I'm on Gwen with this one," Merlin said apologetically.
"But Merlin! We haven't set anything on fire this past two weeks!"
Merlin winced. "Actually… Lancelot and I already set something on fire."
Gwaine pouted with resentment. "Oh, sorry. I should have known that you preferred Lancelot over me."
"I don't! I like you both equally!"
Gwaine turned away from him, crossing his arms.
Merlin shared an exasperated look with Gwen. "Look," Merlin said. "We didn't actually mean to set anything on fire. So you really can't base your statement over that."
Gwaine turned back to him with glee. "So does that mean you still haven't intentionally set anything else on fire after we burned that old lord's whole underwear drawer two weeks ago?"
"I suppose so."
Gwaine snapped his fingers. "That's it. We're going to set something on fire."

Arthur’s eyes flicker down to Merlin’s mouth, just the way they did all those years ago. Only, this time, Merlin thinks that maybe it’s not his imagination.
“So,” he says, and Arthur’s eyes move back to meet his gaze. “Gwen tells me your type nowadays is tall, dark haired, lanky men.”
Arthur lets out a loud bark of a laugh that makes butterflies burst in Merlin’s stomach. It sounds so alive, so easy and bright, so much like Arthur but so much happier, no longer burdened by the weight of a kingdom resting on his shoulders. And when Arthur smiles at him, it’s warm and teasing and a little bit in love. It feels like home.
“Hasn’t it always been?”
And so Merlin kisses him, because he has waited a thousand years, has loved Arthur for even longer, and he doesn’t have to wonder anymore.
