His eyes dart back and forth over Shane’s. His breath comes out in a cold fog, heavy. “You really believe that? In me? Like that?”

He looks out at the street, and then back at Shane. “Yes,” he says lower.
Shane’s heart is pounding. Ilya’s lips are chapped. He doesn’t think too strongly about what the connection between the two is.
Freedom brings Ilya to college, obligation brings Shane, and loneliness brings them to each other.
