    Summary

"You," Alfred said, voice suddenly venomous. "He loved you, though. Didn't he? Somewhere along the line. You were the quiet one, the good one. Never threw tantrums, never set anything on fire. Sweet, polite Matthew. Golden boy."

    The last words dripped acid.

"Bet he still has that stupid painting of you in the attic or whatever. The one where you're all blond curls and big eyes. Bet he looks at it when he's drunk and gets all maudlin."

    Matthew recoiled. "That's not-"

"Don't." Alfred's eyes sharpened, suddenly lucid and vicious. "Don't lie to me right now. Everyone wants you. And me? I'm the asshole they call when they need someone to bleed for them. You were so quiet, so good. Never demanded anything. He didn't have to try with you. Must've been nice."

Matthew's laugh came out strangled. "Nice? He forgot my name half the time."

"Yeah, but when he remembered-" Alfred's eyes were glassy, fever-bright. "When he remembered, it was soft, y'know Gentle. Like you were something breakable he didn't want to drop. Me? I was the thing he threw across the room to see if it'd break."

    Summary

Alfred narrated the whole time, voice low and excited.

"That's NGC 891-edge-on spiral, see the dust lane cutting right through it like a belt? Textbook perfect. And over here, look, look, that's the Helix Nebula. Planetary nebula. Dying star blowing off its outer layers. Kinda beautiful, kinda sad, right?"

Matthew backed away, lowering himself into the snow. The cold seeped through his layers, soothing rather than biting. He lay back, arms spread, staring up. The stars felt closer here, intimate. He hadn't realized how much he'd missed simple stargazing without schedules, without obligations.

He glanced at Alfred: still glued to the telescope, but the frantic energy had softened into something quieter. A small, genuine smile curved his lips, not the flashy hero grin for crowds, but the soft one only Matthew ever saw. It lit his eyes like reflected starlight.

    He was the monster now.

    And heroes-

Heroes were supposed to slay monsters.

So where did that leave him?

    Summary

The older nation's shoulders visibly tensed under his shirt. "Why in the world do you suddenly care whether l'm proud of you? You've never needed my approval before. You've made that abundantly clear for centuries." He rinsed a plate aggressively, water spraying. “Look, I would unload it myself, but l'm washing these by hand first. It's only fair."

Alfred stepped closer, leaning his hip against the counter beside the sink. Up close, he could see the faint flush climbing Arthur's neck.

    Good. Discomfort was the goal.

Then why did it feel like Alfred was the one bleeding out here?

"I demand payment, dude. This is the payment I want. Come on, they're just words. It's not like I'm asking for the Crown Jewels or anything unreasonable. I'll do everything. Just say it."

    Summary

After decades of resentment and silence, Arthur finally reaches out to Alfred. A late-night meeting in London forces both nations to confront the painful scars of their shared past colonial days, revolution, and the brotherly love that never quite died. Pure sibling angst, no romance.
