    Fastening his scrub cap, Wei Wuxian falters. "What?"

    "It is an old philosophy of cardiothoracic surgery," his attending continues. "What is the most common cause of death in the hours after open heart surgery?"

    "Bleeding, sir."

    "That's correct. And how do you suppose you control the bleeding once it starts?"

    Wei Wuxian pauses, his attending's meaning dawning on him. "You have to... stop it. By hand."

    "Precisely," Dr. Xie remarks. "If you learn nothing else from this residency program, know this: a bleeding heart is a silent killer. You have time to handle it..." He rises, snapping the book shut. "...until you don't."

    Or: Wei Wuxian was left heartbroken in his fourth year of medical school, unable to keep the best thing he ever had. He's been burying himself under a mountain of achievements ever since.
