Summary
Jon takes a deep breath to fight back the angry, desperate tears that threaten to spill and clog up his throat. His hands are clenched to painful fists, helping him fight for control, not knowing how fruitless it is.
Elias simply watches him, his piercing gaze almost gentle.
“Don’t,” Jon whispers. “Just leave.”
“You still don’t understand,” Elias says, taking a step and then another, until he’s in front of Jon, only a few centimetres taller, yet seeming to loom over him nonetheless. “You’re my Archivist. You are my priority and my responsibility.”Or: Jon returns to the institute bleeding and hurting, and Elias decides to look after him.

Summary
Jon is miserable after his colleagues abandon him. He turns to the last person in the world that could possibly understand him. Elias has always known that Jon would come back to him eventually, so he uses the opportunity to turn Jon to his side once and for all.

Elias can imagine him in vivid perfection, sitting on the moth-eaten chair of a nowhere motel in America and hunched with no regard to the state of his shoulders and back over a scratched-up table with a lonely lamp, tugged over from the bedside table. His ruined right hand scratching with an almost ink-free pen against the paper.
He may not be able to see Jon’s name in his own handwriting, but he can see Jon, perhaps.

Jon laughed. It was nothing like how a laugh should sound. "I don't suppose now you'll tell me some nonsense about how you loved me all along?”
"Oh no, Jon. Don't be so pedestrian." Jon could hear Elias’s smile. "Love you? No, boy, I Know you. And isn't that a far more intimate thing?"
Yes, Jon thought distantly. Yes, it was. To be known completely, understood utterly, and still chosen for exactly what you were—wasn't that worse?
