“You there?” Leon’s voice breaks through the memories, and they dissipate like smoke.
“Yeah— yeah. I’m here. Luis is, too,” you add, meeting his gaze. He presses closer, his hair tickling your cheek as he strains to listen in. His bare chest nudges your back, emitting heat like a radiator. You resist the urge to shiver from it. “We’re both okay.”
There’s shuffling on the other end of the line. “You’re together?”
“Yeah. They booted us out at the same time. Lucky us, huh?”
Silence. Sound so absent you wonder if the call dropped.
“We tried to see you,” you continue, something heavy and all too significant from the other end seeping through the receiver, forcing the words forth from your mouth like a confession, “but no one let us. They either wouldn’t answer or just say you were busy—” a scoff from Leon, the only indication that he is still there, “and even Ashley had to pull some strings to say goodbye to us. Though only separately. Did she ever get to see you?”
“She did.” For a moment, it’s like Leon isn’t going to respond any further. And then: “She’s home safe now.”
You blow out a breath, air whistling past your teeth. There it is— mission accomplished.
