Summary
Ryland Grace is trying to find his footing in a world where he's been blacklisted from what feels like every higher academic institution in the world. Teaching middle school science wasn't really where he planned on ending up, but he's enjoying it far more than his other academic career. Sure, his students can be unbearable at times, but it's not like they're going to publicly humiliate and ridicule him about his life's work.
Sierra Six is trying to get out from under the feet of people who'd rather see him dead in a ditch somewhere, all while adamantly not thinking to hard about the death of the closest person he had to a father. It's admittedly a bit difficult when he's become responsible for the wellbeing of a teenager who was practically said man's daughter; He is qualified for many things, but being a father is not one of them.The sudden appearance of a long lost dead brother throws a wrench in both their life plans

Summary
Researchers can be incompetent in conventional ways: narcissists, traditionalists, frauds, etc. Given this, Ryland Grace hates a lot of academics—hypocritical, since he isn't the model academic himself—but at least his dysfunction produces results.
Simon Fleischer, however, earns a special kind of resentment. Worse, he’s in Ryland’s university anatomy department, a man who likes science because dead things can still be beautiful. Yikes.
A specimen complicates things, and Simon Fleischer is very much still there.
(or alternatively, Grace gets his heart broken in many, many ways.)
