Innocent was perfectly pleasant sipping his tea while decidedly not noticing that Aldo did not touch his. Instead he offered him some cookies, which were intensely fragrant. He could smell the honey baked into them when he had walked into the room.
“Have one, I tried my hand at baking. Thomas enjoys them a lot.”
Aldo forced a smile and chose his words carefully.
“No, that’s very kind of you to offer.” Rules and warnings were whirring in his head. These meetings were shaping up to be more mentally strenuous than even the chess matches he had held with Innocents predecessor. Dark eyes gleamed amused.
Meanwhile Aldo kept mentally counting the minutes until it was deemed polite enough for him to make excuses and escape the lovely receiving room of the Papal quarters.
Innocent has been exceptionally charming, making even their talks about tedious bureaucratic problems within the secretariat enjoyable, much to Aldo’s chagrin. He kept feeling his guard slip.

“That’s right,” Wang Lingjiao coos. Less than six paces away from her, Ziyuan’s face is so red that she looks as if she might burst at any moment, and Wei Wuxian is sprawled on the floor with Zidian sparking over his back. His robes are still whole, so the whip must not have touched him yet: but the sight of his bitten lip, already pierced through in anticipation of pain, is more than Jiang Fengmian can bear.
“Very well,” he says simply. “If you want Lotus Pier, then take it. Given that, I wonder how you can still have the face to demand that I punish A-Xian.”
Or: the one where Jiang Fengmian decides to turn back on his way to Qishan, and the capture of Lotus Pier goes somewhat differently as a result.

“They say that Jin-furen refuses to wear mourning,” Nie Huaisang said to Lan Xichen, when he visited Gusu in the wake of Jin Guangyao’s funeral. “What if—what if something’s wrong, Xichen-gege? She was devoted to San-ge, so why would she…”
This was so far beyond belief that Lan Xichen dismissed Huaisang’s report at once. But he wrote to Qin Su that evening, asking her if all was well; and though he visited the mail-office nearly every day during the week that followed, he received no reply.
In which something is rotten at the heart of Lanling, and Lan Xichen attempts—and fails—to discover what it might be.

Qin Su has never seen Lan Xichen lose his composure before. The corners of his eyes are scarlet, and his face is whiter than the snowy collar of his gown; and if the two of them were not seated, Qin Su suspects that he would have collapsed on the spot.
She takes another sip of tea. “That is what he said.”
Lan Xichen looks at her in desperation. “But—”
“Do you think I would mistake the voice of my intended?” she asks quietly. “I heard him speaking with one of your former disciples—Su Minshan, I think. My child will be allowed only two or three years; though A-Yao said that he would reconsider if it learns to talk before its first birthday, as he did.”
At the other end of the table, Zewu-jun makes another sound of anguish.
(In which Lan Xichen hosts a hundred-day feast and a wedding, and Qin Su and Jin Rusong are spared by a timely stroke of luck.)

Lan Wangji had been missing for nearly five months when Lan Xichen arranged his marriage to Wei Wuxian.
The thing was done as well as two war-weary clans could manage, though no one apart from Lan Xichen and Jiang Yanli were party to the arrangements. A pair of paper effigies took the place of the deceased bridegrooms, and a spare tent—hastily vacated by a pair of Jiang Yanli’s shidis, who took up residence with a shixiong for the evening—served as their nuptial chamber; and when the rites were over, Wei Wuxian’s memorial tablet was sent back to rest in the Cloud Recesses’ grand ancestral hall.

Despite his passion for love-ballads and romance novels, Wei Wuxian never expected that he might be married one day. As the common-born ward of a merchant, he lacked the standing to find a wife among the gentry; and though he had liked the idea of a love match—where neither his rank nor that of his wife would matter very much, as long as Wei Wuxian could provide a comfortable home for them—no would-be beloved had ever materialized.
It was thus that he came to be unwed at the age of twenty-four, when one of his uncle’s old friends from court wrote to Lotus Pier to ask if Jiang Fengmian would be in favor of a ruzhui marriage with Wei Wuxian as the bridegroom.

Summary
When Song Lan confronts Xue Yang in Yi City, Xue Yang makes him an offer he can't refuse: Song Lan moves in. Xiao Xingchen stays ignorant (and happy). Nobody has to die.
Three in a coffin house becomes four. This is, it turns out, not an easy adjustment to make. Xue Yang discovers that Song Lan moving in means living with Song Lan. Xiao Xingchen's reunion with his dear friend isn't going as smoothly as he'd hoped. Song Lan realizes that Xiao Xingchen has built a life without him in it. A-Qing is pretty sure everyone here has lost their minds.
But they're going to make this work. Or die trying.

Summary
One of the many AUs of the Lucia Lawrence-Benítez multiverse. This is the one in which Thomas takes infant Lucia to raise as a single dad in England. At Thomas's insistence, Vincent remains Pope Innocent XIV. Lucia never knows him. It's not what either of them really wanted, but they thought it was the only way to keep themselves and their baby safe.
Years later, Thomas is diagnosed with cancer. Near the end of Thomas's life, Vincent resigns as pope and comes to England to take over the care of their daughter.
