When Waloed sends a trade delegation to Rosaria, Clive has a plan. Meeting the actual person will dissolve his embarrassing crush. That's how these things work. Reality arrives, the idea collapses, problem solved. Easy.

The problem is that Cidolfus Telamon, in person, is not smaller than the version in Clive's head.

“Cid…sleep with me,” Clive lowers his head.
He doesn’t wanna see his reaction, too afraid to look him in the eye, see his face. It’s bad enough that the man stays silent.
Clive can’t take it.
He didn’t expect an answer, he felt quite pathetic even asking but he just couldn’t keep quiet.
Again; a failure, useless, not fit for anything, undeserving. Everyone was right.
“Reckon I could do that…” Cid takes a slow drag. “And then what? Back to moping, moving around like a ghost? Or are you truly gonna kill yourself?”
“Cid…I beg you,” he lowers his forehead even more, resting it against his boot, his grip on the man’s leg tightening slightly.”I was depressed and then I was horny and so is Clive ✌️

Five years after Drakes Head, Clive finds Cid in an unexpected place.
It was empty. Silent. Dark. Until, it wasn't. Cid’s eyes shot open with a gasp.It felt like he had been holding his breath for eons. His lungs burned as he tried to sit up, not realizing at first that he’d woken up not on the ground or in a bed, but on a large piece of wood, his tired body half-hanging off into icy cold water. Waves picked up and tossed him around violently, almost throwing him entirely into the sea. In a panic he scrambled against the wood for purchase, barely managing to get both his legs back on.
“Fuuuuuuck!” he half screamed, shaking his head. He tossed it to the sky again in hopes to see something, anything, to help him figure out where he was. Nothing but more fog and clouds heavy with rain were there to greet him.
Then, a shimmer of blue light suddenly caught his eye.

Summary
Cid has always thought the romantic tales of souls switching to be overblown nonsense, not least because he’s seen it go bad so many times. Waking up as a Bearer in service to the Holy Empire of Sanbreque doesn’t seem likely to change his mind – especially not when he learns what, exactly, four Bearers are doing in the woods not far from Waloed’s camp.
Clive, meanwhile, hasn’t thought much at all about such things in the five years since the burning of Phoenix Gate. As far as he’s concerned, a switch with Waloed’s Lord Commander is just one more hardship that he needs to survive long enough to track down his brother’s killer and take his revenge.
Neither of them expect this switch to end well. Both of them, of course, are wrong.
