“Wow,” Wei Wuxian said numbly. He was completely unable to look away, the urge to go there and press his lips to that sliver of bared skin absurdly powerful.
“It is not so bad,” Lan Zhan said mildly, his fingers resting lightly on the smooth wood of the guqin.
“It really is,” Wei Wuxian said, shocked at the strength of his reaction.

Lan Sizhui recognizes his tone—this is the voice that Wei Wuxian uses on hurt people and young children, a very calm and no-nonsense voice that has none of the mischief and cheer of the way he sounds the rest of the time. Lan Sizhui looks up and meets his eyes, and they are dark, stormy gray, muddled and concerned.
“I’m all right,” he croaks.
“Hush,” Wei Wuxian says, in a low croon, like someone quieting a baby. Then he blinks, and looks away, awkward. “I mean—you shouldn’t speak. You’re tired. Rest if you need to.”

Summary
Autumn, 1930, New York City. The Guardian of Forever has given Spock and Captain Kirk one chance. An enterprising and neighbourly woman, Edith Keeler, is able to offer them work when they arrive, but Jim realises her rate of payment won't be enough to get them the supplies they need in order to locate McCoy before their timeline is forever altered. With little honest and lucrative work available, Jim manages to make a series of connections which will allow him to be paid for sexually servicing men at a discerning hotel in the evenings. Of course, Spock and Edith can't know.
Much like "City on the Edge of Forever", this is a Jim Kirk character study featuring complicated feelings about life, death, and falling in love.

Summary
Days after Jim turns down vice admiralty and commits to staying with the Enterprise, a new wave of unexplainable health issues begin to hit him that are uncomfortably similar to what he had experienced in recovery from the warp core. With another long stretch of Enterprise reconstruction lying ahead of the crew, Jim attempts to make the most of his time ashore by burying himself in work, but with his body steadily deteriorating and his mind dragged back into old wounds in tow, he hurtles towards burnout long before he can set sail again.
