I imagine it’s terribly easy for one’s mental health to dwindle in such a state. How many men like you do you think go missing and never turn up, Will? Having hurled themselves off of a bridge somewhere when the loneliness became too much."

In an Alternative Universe, Will is not called upon by Jack to help the FBI, but he still teaches. When Alana somehow manages to convince him to join her for after-work drinks, she introduces him to her elusive old mentor, Dr Hannibal Lecter, who decides that he must have Will by any means necessary, which is exactly how Will finds himself waking up in a concrete cellar.

Summary
Beau Graham's boy always struggled with relationships and social cues, but after the death of his mother, things reached a boiling point. Fights at school, unusual interests, and with every passing day, he seemed to become more distant and withdrawn. When an old pal over at the docks suggested an alternative form of companionship to try and help the kid open up, Beau was sceptical. Artificial companions were out of his price range, not to mention the maintenance costs, but his buddy insisted that he knew a way to obtain defunct, outdated models that were just as good as the shiny new ones, and there were ways to get them fixed up on the down low if necessary.
Beau was desperate; he couldn't lose his son.

Dennis froze. As he did, he noticed the man before him tensing in turn, muscles tightening beneath skin, chest inflating with a deep breath. He knew that voice. He dreaded looking up, but it was like watching a car crash; he had to look.
“Dr Robby?” He blurted out, voice cracking as if he’d just been cursed by a repeated adolescence.-
Or, Dennis goes to a gay bar, discovers it's actually a leather daddy bar, and bumps into Dr Robby.

It was fine to need to get out of bed during the night to make a trip to the bathroom, of course it was. Even a couple of times was no bother. But on the night that Will was awoken no less than five times by Hannibal creeping out of bed to urinate, he’d had enough.

Or: Post-fall and in the future, when Will and Hannibal are married and 49/60, they begin to experience some of the complications of ageing. (And it's horny.)

When Will wakes up injured and blind after the fall from the cliff, he has to work twice as hard to navigate his new life. Then he discovers Hannibal has struggles of his own. He and Hannibal have to help each other find themselves again.
A story in which Hannibal is a little more human than he lets on and Will is still as perceptive as ever.
