Summary
Oh, how much can change in four months.
There, bent over Caterina’s bedside, a pair of gold-rimmed spectacles slipping down the bridge of his nose, is Emmrich. He looks up at the sound of the door, those bright hazel eyes reflecting nearby candlelight. Surprise widens his gaze, but in an instant, as recognition takes hold, every feature softens. He smiles for Lucanis and it’s so good to see that Lucanis’ knees grow watery beneath his weight, threatening to give out entirely. He could weep for relief at the sight. That near-need to collapse morphs quickly into something else as Lucanis’ leg muscles twitch, convulsing with a sudden urge to run toward Emmrich, a jerky start and stop motion, a single, stumbling step. His heart leaps and Lucanis suddenly can’t breathe.

Summary
Like passing through a sound and light-proof curtain, the invisible edge of Gale's modified privacy spell gives way as the elf pushes closer, filling Astarion's ears with the tumultuous drumbeat of the wizard's heart. It's not the soothing rhythm of a heart at peace. It's more like the accelerated pace that he's used to hearing when Gale is forced to push his physical limits in battle, a brisk, throbbing pulse of hot blood that leaves Astarion's fangs aching and his mouth watering. But there's also a wet sound: a squishing, squelching noise, like–
Gale's voice catches in a gasp before rising in a strung-out moan, and the elf suddenly realizes what he's overhearing.
OR: A nosy vampire sneaks up to Gale's tent one night to find out why he's being so unusually quiet. And boy, does he get an eyeful.

Summary
There’s something they never mention about becoming an abomination. Aside from the obvious - that it’s painful and horrifying and destroys the very sense of self you hold dear - it’s that once you become one, you never feel warm again. Becoming an abomination is to become something that is spurned by everyone, cast aside, an object to be destroyed.
So what happens when you don’t completely become one?
You become… Other. Different. An abomination, but not even that was done properly. Dead, mourned over - and yet alive.
Lucanis knows all of these things. They bleed constantly into his thoughts, questions he can never find answers to, something so painfully and horrifyingly unique that there is no one to ask. No one he can turn to for answers to questions he had never wanted to tackle.
