Summary
Oh, how much can change in four months.
There, bent over Caterina’s bedside, a pair of gold-rimmed spectacles slipping down the bridge of his nose, is Emmrich. He looks up at the sound of the door, those bright hazel eyes reflecting nearby candlelight. Surprise widens his gaze, but in an instant, as recognition takes hold, every feature softens. He smiles for Lucanis and it’s so good to see that Lucanis’ knees grow watery beneath his weight, threatening to give out entirely. He could weep for relief at the sight. That near-need to collapse morphs quickly into something else as Lucanis’ leg muscles twitch, convulsing with a sudden urge to run toward Emmrich, a jerky start and stop motion, a single, stumbling step. His heart leaps and Lucanis suddenly can’t breathe.

Summary
Like passing through a sound and light-proof curtain, the invisible edge of Gale's modified privacy spell gives way as the elf pushes closer, filling Astarion's ears with the tumultuous drumbeat of the wizard's heart. It's not the soothing rhythm of a heart at peace. It's more like the accelerated pace that he's used to hearing when Gale is forced to push his physical limits in battle, a brisk, throbbing pulse of hot blood that leaves Astarion's fangs aching and his mouth watering. But there's also a wet sound: a squishing, squelching noise, like–
Gale's voice catches in a gasp before rising in a strung-out moan, and the elf suddenly realizes what he's overhearing.
OR: A nosy vampire sneaks up to Gale's tent one night to find out why he's being so unusually quiet. And boy, does he get an eyeful.

Summary
There’s something they never mention about becoming an abomination. Aside from the obvious - that it’s painful and horrifying and destroys the very sense of self you hold dear - it’s that once you become one, you never feel warm again. Becoming an abomination is to become something that is spurned by everyone, cast aside, an object to be destroyed.
So what happens when you don’t completely become one?
You become… Other. Different. An abomination, but not even that was done properly. Dead, mourned over - and yet alive.
Lucanis knows all of these things. They bleed constantly into his thoughts, questions he can never find answers to, something so painfully and horrifyingly unique that there is no one to ask. No one he can turn to for answers to questions he had never wanted to tackle.

Summary
"We haven't spoken since that day you left, but you... you thought of me?"
Astarion hesitates, hope a fragile thing, doubly so for his double desires. "All this time?"
Gale chuckles at that - if he only knew the days and nights he ticked away thinking of him, worrying for his safety. Truthfully, he thought often of their entire party. He worried about Karlach and Wyll in Avernus, of Lae'zel in the astral plane, of Shadowheart and her parents - but no single member of their party occupied his thoughts like Astarion. In ways he never considered, Astarion took up residence in his mind, in his heart. Gale smiled softly, running his fingers through his greying hair. "Of course.”
—
Having gone their separate ways after the fall of The Absolute, Gale and Astarion meet once more at the reunion party and discover they’d both been rather foolish.

Summary
From the moment he found himself at the Nautiloid crash site, the chains of his compulsion broken, Astarion had one objective: to kill Cazador or die trying. To take back his life. He never gave much thought to what he would do after, or if he even knew what it meant to live.
It was some small comfort that Gale of Waterdeep seemed similarly unmoored.

Summary
“Watch out, Astarion, there’s mistletoe above your head.”
He glances up in the same moment that Gale stumbles gracelessly into him, Astarion’s arms coming up automatically to catch Gale without even thinking. There’s indeed mistletoe above them, held in Shadowheart’s wiggling fingers, her wretched face smirking down at them from the stairway with both her brows raised.
A challenge, it seems.

Summary
“So you should be able to come now that the orb is stabilized, right?”
After more than a month of travelling together, he has yet to have a conversation with Astarion which did not induce whiplash. It just typically happens in the middle of a conversation. It doesn’t set him at ease to have it happen up front. Heat crawls up his face and he sits up because he’s not sure lying down while having whatever in the Hells this conversation is going to be is advisable.
“You know, most people announce themselves before entering someone else’s tent, and perhaps even start conversations with a greeting,” Gale scolds, snapping his book shut.
Astarion plasters on one of his sharpest artificial smiles and says, with that pleasant, hollow affect he knows Gale can’t stand, “Hello, Gale. What do you think about this weather we’re having? Shadows with a chance of raving cultists for the foreseeable future! Now will you answer my question?”

It does things to Astarion, that devious smile. Trips him up, makes his empty chest ache. Makes him want to try and hold Gale hopelessly close, closer.
Stay.
In the wake of Elminster's visit, Gale is wistful and full of longing. It sets Astarion's teeth on edge.

Summary
“I’m used to performing, you know,” he continued, staring at the tendrils on Gale’s shoulder, because it was easier to talk to them than actually talk to him. “I didn’t know I was still capable of…of want.”
“And what is it you want?”
Well, wasn’t that the ten thousand gold question?
“You.”

Astarion is surprised to rediscover his libido. He’s even more surprised for the target of it to be Gale.

Summary
“A mage should be unnerved by a mage killer.” Lucanis’ response was equally soft, lacking the usual bristle of hostility that protected him. Whilst there was no traditional way of tracking time in the Lighthouse, it was definitely long after midnight and both men were simply tired.
“Not this mage, I hope.” Shifting in his seat, Emmrich stretched his arms out, bangles and rings glimmering in the flickering light from the fireplace. “Not after… Everything.” When he raised his eyes to look at Lucanis they were ringed with dark circles - almost bruises on his pale skin. They look hollow. Haunted. Lucanis knew he didn’t look any better.
“No, Emmrich. Not this mage. Coffee?” Habit. Safety. Security. Make coffee, take each step one at a time and perform the ritual to push back the thoughts crowding inside his skull. His hands were perfectly steady as he pulled the beans down from the shelf, each step a familiar routine as he ground them, releasing their heady scent.Bookmarked by FernWrites

Summary
That he feels this way is nothing new. He’s always wanted. He’s found ways to stifle it in the past, but he’s out of practice. A few years alone, slipping into the dismal acceptance that he’d likely never experience some great love or have a person to call his own, had allowed the beast to sleep.
But it’s awake now. It begs him to look and torment himself as Lucanis and Neve look at one another and make flippant comments that toe the line of flirtatiousness.

Summary
Astarion stands at his tent, pretending to pick at his nails, the edge of his dagger gliding harmlessly under the hard nailbed to collect debris though he’s already cleaned them twice now. Any lingering dirt still remaining won’t come out no matter how hard he digs.
Filthy fingertips aside, he glances up quick and catches it again.
That wizard, Gale, staring at him from his own tent across the camp.
At being caught, the wizard startles slightly, eyes going wider as he turns in place and fumbles for something to grab. His clumsy hands land on one of the pointless metal contraptions he has gathered up outside his tent and Astarion watches as he picks it up and examines it a little too closely to be believable.

Summary
He can see it now: Their team toppled over, exhausted, hope lost. Bloodied, battered and bruised… sobbing at the acceptance of death before them. And then the wizard turns around. He imparts them a quiet melancholy smile. His eyes flicker to Astarion's and the vampire sees it: the decision made without his input. Gale mouths an, “I love you,” before snapping his fingers. Astarion and the rest are teleported to safety and in the distance they see an explosion.
Astarion shakes his head, “No! Stop!” His hand frees from under his lover as he rubs both his hands across his face. Gale awakens suddenly, eyes wide and in a split second he's up running his hands through his curls, soothing the rogue.
“My love! Are you alright? What ever is the matter?!”
Astarion swats his hands away. “You! You fool! And you would do it, too!”

Summary
Gale yelps as Astarion's very cold fingers find his midriff. Astarion laughs, burrowing deeper under Gale's robe.
“Ah-ha, Astarion, did you take an ice bath on the way here?” Gale protests.
“Well usually I wake up to somebody very ready to warm me up.” Astarion purrs.
“You know what they say; cold hands, warm heart,” Gale says, absently.
Astarion pinches him, gently.
“Ow!” Gale protests, “What, you're allowed to come and put your hands all over me but I'm not allowed to make comments like that?”
“You can do better, love,” Astarion says, sniffily. “That was practically lazy. I'm afraid I've become accustomed to a much higher calibre of charm.”
“Are you insinuating that I have somehow spoiled you, Astarion?”
“For anyone else, absolutely,” Astarion agrees, sadly.
Shadowheart sighs.
“Glad you two are as disgusting as ever,” she says.Series
