    It’s a difficult concept for Shane to grasp, taking up space like that. Birthday parties are always so loud and demanding of everyone’s attention, and Shane doesn’t know how to handle it, always stressed that people don’t actually want to be there or are just patronising him. The idea that people want to get together to celebrate Shane, besides his parents and husband, is completely foreign to him. The idea that his hockey team would show up for his birthday is incomprehensible.

    Shane swivelled around, turning his attention to the staff spread around the studio, “You really don’t see it? Oh my god, how could anyone watch this and not immediately understand what’s going on.”

    The room fell silent. Shane launched up and stood next to the editor at the controls, “Go back a few secs. Wait a second… There it is. There!” The footage paused on a wide shot of the ice, a ref had begun to skate towards Ilya, directing him back to his bench.

    “Okay go forward just like, as slow as possible.” The editor did as instructed. “Shit, sorry, it’s so quick. Go back. Okay, forward. Stop! Look, right there.”

    He heard someone from the crew murmur, “Oh my god.”

    Shane’s voice broke as he ran his hands through his hair, “Yeah. So, now do you understand why I have to do this?”

    Or: Shane makes sure the documentary finishes differently and it's the most romantic thing Ilya Rozanov has ever seen.

Harris will have to ask Ilya if Shane is okay with this being posted or if it messes with the image they've been trying to build with the Irina Foundation. “Ilya, I told you I don’t have time for phone sex tonight.”

    “No, no- am just calling to say goodnight, moy svet. Is almost your boring Canadian bedtime.” Ilya’s voice has the teasing lilt Harris has become familiar with. He’ll have to check with Ilya about the Russian for the subtitles. And then double check with Google translate in case Ilya thinks he can get away with something.
