Clark looks around himself, at the star system that should have been the final resting place of three astronauts, and only two of them are accounted for. The Hail Mary, and Dr Ryland Grace with it, are completely absent.
Clark floats for a moment, looking around himself in honest, total bafflement, as if Ryland Grace is going to appear from thin air if he wills it hard enough. He furrows his brow.
“Huh.”

This was a question Colt had asked Ryland one night, staring at the ceiling as his brother scribbled formulas on his science homework. Colt always complained when the lamp at his desk remained on past eleven, but tonight was different. The sound of his pencil pausing was long enough for Colt to sit up and meet the other boys intense, sad but thoughtful stare.
"I don't know." Ryland answered honestly, always honestly with Colt, even if he didn't want to hear it. "Maybe it just won't."
"I don't think I can handle that." Colt pursed his lips, looking down at his hands as he interlocked them in his lap.
Ryland didn't say anything for a long time, looking away from his brother for a bit with his eyebrows knit together. He seemed to settle for a quiet, "Me either."

Or, Holland March ends up with three kids instead of one, even if it should've been four. Everything and everyone is a complete disaster, but at least they're not alone.

Summary
Ryland Grace has been away from Earth for a long time. Just over 13 years, to be exact. That's a long time, and a lot of things can happen in that time.
Such as, for example, superheroes becoming a thing.
Aka, Grace gets a Green Lantern ring when he goes back to save Rocky, and is suddenly drawn into the chaos of the DC Universe. He tries to make the best of it.
