Summary
Gustave had been ready to sacrifice himself for his sister.
He had not been ready for his sister to drag him back from death itself.
With Renoir’s final Gommage looming over them, Gustave is constrained to accept co-leading the expedition with Verso, a powerful Alpha. To add to Gustave’s frustration, his own Alpha dynamic has weakened—command lacks authority, need for control is secondary and his sensitivity to pheromones is deficient. As if he needed all of that while trying to save the canvas…
Apparently, such was the price of being reborn from old chroma.
But the true cost lingered…

Summary
He tells himself, as he huddles over the campfire while the others sleep and tries to keep the pain inside, that it's for the best. Gustave was always already gone. Verso will end the Canvas and, if he doesn't, Aline will die and Renoir will destroy the Canvas anyway. The end, whatever form it takes, is close and Verso's lived with worse guilt for longer.
Or: Verso sacrifices Gustave, and his bond, to end everything and free his family. Only nothing (because he's Verso) goes as planned. Maelle wins, Gustave comes back, and so do the bleeding remnants of something that barely existed.

Summary
Verso knows his soul is not original to him. A stitched-up, fractured, and glued-together thing, stained with memories not his own and heavy with the grief of unimaginable loss. His very existence is a farce, a tragedy played out in canvas and ink. He wants nothing so much as to end it. To give the ragged remains of a soul back to the one who created him, let her find someone else to carry the burden and the memory of the man to whom it once belonged. And yet. And yet, still, buried deep inside him is the desire to make this second-hand soul his own. To take the old discarded thing and make it into something new. To live, as they all deserve to live. All he needs is someone to show him the way.

Summary
She was going to Gommage. She had failed, and she was going to pay for it with her life.
She couldn’t save Lumière. She couldn’t save her friends…
She couldn’t save—
“Gustave?!”
* * *
When Gustave wakes to find Lumière decimated and his friends beaten and bruised, his first instinct is to run to the sound of Maelle’s voice calling his name; her cries like a battering ram to his fragile heart, smashing it to pieces. He doesn’t know how he’s alive, or why. But when he tries to hug her — to hold his darling girl in his arms — she collapses.
And that’s when he realizes something is very wrong.
TLDR; Gustave was revived in Act III but something went horribly wrong.

Summary
Of all the sights Verso Dessendre had expected to see when he stepped into an alley two filthy corners away from the rue Laplace, it was not this: an omega with his back to a medieval wall, sword held in one steady hand, holding two alphas at bay.
Or: It's midsummer in the Paris of the Belle Époque and Verso Dessendre's strange, half-lived life starts to change forever, while Gustave Auclair only hopes his changes for the better--and that the annoying alpha who's suddenly turned up to disrupt everything would just go away.
