Summary
Trinity takes a deep breath, steeling herself. “I was wondering whether I could switch to working night shifts. All the time.”
Abbot raises his eyebrows, not actually looking that surprised. “May I ask what brought this on?”
“Just…” avoiding my ex-not-even-girlfriend? Probably not the best thing to say. “Just looking for a new experience. I feel like I could learn a lot from working nights.”
He stares at her for a moment. It’s a little unnerving, and Trinity feels her back straighten instinctively. Then he smiles, clapping his hands together.
“About time.”

Summary
If Trinity thought her blood pressure had spiked when she saw the knife, the feeling that she gets when she sees Izzy in the doorway to the room Trinity had left is akin to the worst case of hypertension she's ever seen. She wouldn't be surprised if the veins in her eyes are bursting, sending ribbons of red spilling out across the whites.
Alex is beginning to speak again, his voice shaking but his tone firm and unrelenting. "I have to go—"
Trinity reaches out instinctively, unable to think about anything other than keeping Izzy out of his eyeline. "Alex! Don't—"
She doesn't see him pull out the knife. But a split second after he moves there's a sharp pain in her left arm, blood immediately welling up out of a slash across it. She presses onto it with her other hand, shying away from him in pain, her basic animal brain telling her to protect the injury.
This is the wrong move.
or: it turns out that, for trinity at least, getting stabbed makes you rethink a few things. among these things is included your ex-situationship-turned-tentative-work-friend-turned-awkward-avoidanceship (yeah, it's a mouthful. maybe quicker to just call her garcia)

MEL KING: YOU DID THIS?
FRANK LANGDON: Probably
FRANK LANGDON: But what this time?Mel sent him a picture of her laptop screen.
MEL KING: THIS. YOU DID THIS.
FRANK LANGDON: Well don’t they look like they’re having fun?
MEL KING: OMG
FRANK LANGDON: 😇
MEL KING: THEY WON’T STOP.
FRANK LANGDON: Don’t make them stop!Queen Mel may be pregnant!
Mel yelled into her closed fists and scrambled back, pushing the laptop away from her. No, no. Queen Mel could absolutely not be pregnant. She still had to get to the top of the gardening career and she had to write 5 books and she hadn’t even –
FRANK LANGDON: Btw
FRANK LANGDON: Jealous?---
OR: Mel plays The Sims. Someone installed a mod she hasn't used before. Now she can't stop picturing it every time she looks at him. He thinks it's funny. A little harmless flirting never hurt anyone, right?

Summary
Actually, Mel's excited about a lot of things going into the new school year. She’s excited to co-teach with Dr. Mohan and Mr. Langdon. She’s excited to continue supporting the kids on her caseload from the previous year, and she knows writing their IEPs will go so much better now that she knows them and their families a little. She’s excited that her Physics class will be entirely made up of students she taught in Chemistry the previous year; they were a great group.
There are things to worry about, too. Co-teaching with two new people again. The daily possibility that she’s going to do something overwhelmingly embarrassing in front of Langdon. Still not knowing where she should go during her prep periods. That she’s going to be just as alone as she’s always been at work, but with some added disappointment because she’s let her hopes get up, just a little.
There’s no way that she and Langdon can co-teach as well as she hopes. She’s sure her bubble will burst soon enough, that her crush will fade, and everything will settle back to baseline.
(It doesn't.)
