And getting home will be far more difficult of a task than a long walk.

I've always been a bit confused by the fact that when Kai pretended to be on Chen's side in Season 4 Episode 7, promising to save Garmadon and Nya from being eaten by the snake, he never actually did anything to help them, and if it weren't for Cole and the other elemental masters, the two of them would have died before the ceremony to take Lloyd's powers was even over.
I'm sure Kai would never have left his sister in such a situation, so here's my interpretation of how it could have gone.

Prompt: Hitoshi thought that Midoriya was the golden child. He decided that he shouldn't involve himself with Midoriya or class 1-A when he transferred. But after a month of trying to deter the greenet with whatever harsh words he could, he decided that he should, maybe, take another step forward.
It's not like Midoriya would understand what he's saying, he's probably never had those words directed at him since he was so privileged. But...
He watched as the freckled teen's kind smile faded away, replaced by sadness and...betrayal? Hitoshi didn't know what he did wrong until the greenet walked away and the angry blond walked up to him, anger sparking in his eyes.
"What the fuck was that?!"
And then Hitoshi learned that Midoriya wasn't as golden as he made the boy out to be.

Summary
Sixty years ago, Emperor Garmadon took over Ninjago and the age of the Dark Empire began. After years of training, Kai and his companions attempt to finally put a stop to his evil rule, but their mission fails and Kai is the only one left in the ashes of their defeat. He's captured and tortured until the day comes that Emperor Garmadon finds a use for him—to become the personal bodyguard of his only son, Lloyd. Kai agrees with no intention of following through on any of Garmadon's orders, but when he becomes attached to the boy, he starts to believe that with Lloyd there is hope for the future.
But the road to hell is paved with good intentions. With his new life's purpose, to put the boy on a path of good, Kai is faced with the inevitable price of sacrificing his own soul.
All the while, the companions he'd thought long gone work relentlessly to build up a rebellion to face the Empire of the Darkest Night and get revenge for the supposed "death" of their lost friend.
