Even if it were possible, a return to things as they were does not feel like much of a choice. More like surrender, like succumbing to a tide that would sweep him back into that numbing sea of alienation in which he has been drowning these last weeks. But if not that, then what?
Nicolò says nothing, just watches Yusuf. Nicolò’s eyes look like a sea too, Yusuf thinks, but not a sea for drowning.

The facts of the matter are this:
1. Yusuf is an unmated Omega,
2. Yusuf is in love with Nicolò,
and, unfortunately for Yusuf,
3. Nicolò is not attracted to Omegas.So when Yusuf mentions that being unmated is an inconvenience, he truly never expects the conversation to spiral to Nicolò offering him a mating mark out of friendship. No one is that good hearted!
...except, apparently, for Nicolò.
Perhaps it's a terrible mistake, to accept the offer and have just a taste of what Yusuf wants most in the world. Perhaps Yusuf is going to break his own heart in the process.
...still. If Nicolò is willing to offer Yusuf almost everything Yusuf has ever dreamed of, what is Yusuf going to do, say no?

"That's the spirit." She gets up and walks over to the fridge, in search of a midnight snack, no doubt. "Now, I'd offer you a bowl of Fruit-Loops, but we wouldn't want to break the rules so soon, because they're- y'know. Fruity."
He snags the closest thing he can reach, a dirty converse sneaker, and lobs it vaguely in the direction of her shins, trying and failing not to laugh with her. "Fuck off. Lent doesn't start until tomorrow."
Or: In which Andy is a troll, Nicky is gay (but not for Lent), Joe is confused but crushing hard nonetheless, and it's going to be a long six weeks for everybody involved.

Joe falls in love easily and it's brought him a lot more disappointment than happiness. The people he falls for might be nice in the beginning, but once the honeymoon period is over it seems like they always find something to criticize. So after a string of relationships that always seem to end with his partners being critical of things that make Joe who he is, Joe comes into his 30s convinced he'll never settle down happily.
Then he meets Nicky, who seems to be genuinely nice and always says the nicest things about Joe's art. Joe has gotten his heart broken too many times to be willing to give this a chance, but over the course of many months and Nicky proving him wrong time and time again, Joe slowly starts to think his love life might not be a lost cause after all.

“You have a lovely mole,” Yusuf said. Nicolò didn’t catch his last word. He looked at him questioningly.
Yusuf tapped on his mole gently as he rinsed his blade. “Mole,” he repeated in Arabic.
“Mole,” said Nicolò in Zeneize. Then he tried to imitate the Arabic word.
Yusuf smiled at his effort. His dimples were showing. It felt like a discovery every time Nicolò saw them.
Nicolò didn’t know what possessed him when he reached out to touch that spot and said, “Dimple.” in Zeneize.
“Dimple,” repeated Yusuf and of course he did perfect the first time. He said the word back in Arabic. Nicolò tried to repeat it. By the way Yusuf smiled, it looked like he did a passable job.
Then it’s all over too quickly. Yusuf scooped some water and rinsed Nicolò’s face, then used his own shirt to dab it. “All done,” he said.
Then their eyes locked and something else, something that in hindsight felt inevitable, shifted.
