The room comes to a stop, the buzzing energy of a win quieting, but Ilya barely hears him, still too caught up on Shane messaging him through Instagram. They have barely talked since their fight. What could he have to say on Instagram of all places?
… What did Barrett say?
Ilya blinks.
A plane went down. The Metros plane?
That cannot be true. Ilya must have heard wrong.
_____Instead of Ilya’s plane going down after their Boxing Day fight, it’s Shane’s. Ilya breaks down in the locker room, assuming the worst. When he finds out Shane is alive, his next assumption is that Shane will be mad at him for outing their relationship to the Centaurs. The team helps him get to Shane though, and all of his fears are put to rest.

Shane blushed again. He ruffled Eva’s hair to stall for time, then finally worked up the nerve to try and explain himself.
“Honestly, I’m not sure. I’ll tell him someday, but I’ve done this with every bouquet he’s ever given me. So I guess I want to wait for a special day to show him.” He paused, then, “Maybe a big anniversary, or when we turn 50 or something.” Eva’s eyes lit up again.
“You’ve pressed all of them? That’s SO romantic Dad, ohmygosh.”

Shane has secretly preserved every flower Ilya has ever given him, and nobody knew for 18 whole years until their 9 year old daughter caught him in the act one day. He tells her (and us!) the stories that go with the flowers in his collection.

Shane huffed out a short laugh before he could stop himself. “No, you’re not.”
The man’s smile shifted at that, turning a little more genuine for a moment before the smirk returned. This time it looked less mocking and more teasing, the corner of his mouth curling upward as his eyes flicked over Shane’s face.
“No, I’m not,” he admitted easily. “I could not watch someone so beautiful suffer through such terrible date. I had to rescue you.”

After months of bugging, Shane finally gave in and let Jackie set him up on a blind date. He’s very quickly reminded why he always says no. It’s going to take him a while to trust Jackie again after this.
Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, Shane and his date happen to be sitting close to a certain blond Russian who can’t stand to see such a pretty boy suffer through such a terrible date.

There was a flash of something across the boys face that left quicker than Shane could place it. The blonde opened and closed his mouth, and then opened it again.
"Ilya."
His voice was quiet, but strong. There was a strong slanting of the vowels revealing an accent Shane wasn't expecting.
"Ill-yeah?" Shane repeated, the name unfamiliar on his tongue.
"Ilya." The boy repeated.
"Ilya." Shane tried again.
The boy nodded, looking expectantly at the black haired boy.
"I'm Shane, how old are you?"
The boy-Ilya-didn't speak this time, instead his eyes roamed the field until he happened upon the discarded baseball and he wandered to go pick it up. Ilya began to toss it up in the air over and over again, not looking back at Shane.
___________Or childhood friends to lovers au with the boys drifting apart in adulthood only to reconnect again in the professional hockey world.
