Summary
Purgatory in Roman Catholic doctrine is a place or state of suffering inhabited by the souls of sinners that have the potential of redeeming themselves by expiating their sins before going to heaven. Could it be that for Aaron Hotchner and Spencer Reid it's a time and place where they can right the wrongs and save themselves and their loved ones?
Alternatively known as 40 years old Spencer Reid and 56 years old Aaron Hotchner from the year 2022 suddenly find themselves in the year 2013 with no idea how they got there and what they should be doing with themselves. While the answers to the latter crystallize rather quickly the desire to find out the former gets drowned under their attempts to right the wrongs and not making the same mistakes again.
Contains middle-aged men that had been through more than fair share of traumas (individually and together) and because of them they have their fair share of regrets, preconceived ideas about whom they should be caring and to what extent.

Partly a post-season 15 deep dive into some of the original Criminal Minds plot holes and plot curiosities with the added bonus of Spencer Reid as the Unit Chief of BAU and looking for an epic way to reintroduce Aaron Hotchner into the series. Heavy on behavioral analysis, and discussion of mental health issues.
Not favorable to the 'The BAU team is a Family' trope. Not Emily Prentiss-friendly. Dark, very dark and light is a long way away.

The drive from the police station to the nearest motel was silent, thick with something neither of them dared name. Hotch’s hands were white-knuckled on the steering wheel, his jaw set so tight that Reid could see the muscle jumping beneath the skin. Spencer had his bag on his lap, fingers drumming absently against the canvas, watching the streetlights slide over Hotch’s face in alternating bands of orange and shadow.
He knew he should say something—should break the tension with a statistic or a quote, something clinical to distance himself from the raw, pulsing need that had started coiling low in his belly the moment Hotch had asked, point-blank, if he was offering. And he had nodded. Like an idiot. Or a genius. He hadn’t quite decided yet.

Summary
Spencer had always believed he understood patterns. That was, in fact, the foundation of his entire life. People behaved in predictable ways, even when they thought they didn’t. Love, statistically speaking, followed certain trends too. There were attachment styles, behavioral shifts, measurable changes in language and proximity. He knew all of that.
What he hadn’t accounted for was Aaron laughing into his shoulder over something completely ridiculous Jack had said about dinosaurs wearing hats.

You match them to the color of your suit to appear taller. You also wear lifts, and you've had the soles of your shoes replaced. One might think you're frugal, but in fact you're having financial difficulties.
Reid witnesses this exchange between Lester Serling and Aaron Hotchner and is immediately turned on.
