Viago finds the man she singles out.
"A chevalier," he says. "What about him?"
"Ugliest boots I have ever seen."
He does not laugh—he has never been the kind of man to laugh too easily, not like Rosa, who laughs at everything and everyone indiscriminately, the only one in on some grand joke she refuses to tell.
He does not laugh.
Instead, he turns his face into her hair, hiding a fleeting smile. Those boots are, in fact, rather ugly.A dance. A bard. A job that goes wrong. A song or two that might be written about it.
